We gained access to real families, showing what things were really like. Before—and during—the early years of his marriage counseling career, Popenoe was one of Americas leading eugenicists. In the 1920s and 1930s, working alongside the Human Betterment Foundation in Pasadena, he was a staunch, vocal advocate for Californias compulsory sterilization laws targeting individuals deemed unfit (including the mentally ill and intellectually disabled).
