My team and I got the assignment to film the lives of five nurses selected as great nurses by a national organization. The film was tough to make. My daughter is a nurse practitioner. I know how hard the job is. But being with this wonderful pediatric cancer nurse brought front and center how difficult it is for the nurse to support children and their families with cancer. He/she must remain optimistic to help children and their parents through a battle that all too often does not have a good outcome.

I know that this video clip is short but every time I see it, I am proud to have made it and I once again honor the nurses who give themselves so completely to their patients and patient families. I pray that someday soon childhood cancer will no longer exist. Until that time, I think every nurse in America and around the world who does this difficult job with skill, kindness and compassion, and overcoming sad times with the faith that they can do something to help.

$The Shocking 1964 Study That Changed American Parenting Forever This television show was made in 1964. I did some of the filming on it. It was called The Parents, and it was looking at the generation gap, which was becoming obvious at that time. It was part of a series called The Values in America. We gained access to real families, showing what things were really like. The speaker is Paul Popenoe who was a highly influential and controversial figure in the study of marriage, family dynamics, and eugenics based in Los Angeles. Known widely as the father of marriage counseling in the United States. In 1930, Popenoe founded the American Institute of Family Relations in Los Angeles. For decades, it was the largest and most famous marriage counseling center in the world. He aimed to stabilize American marriages in the face of rising divorce rates, focusing heavily on pre-marital education, sexual education, and traditional family structures. He also reached millions of everyday Americans through a widely read, long-running syndicated newspaper column and via the famous Ladies Home Journal feature, Can This Marriage Be Saved? Before—and during—the early years of his marriage counseling career, Popenoe was one of Americas leading eugenicists. In the 1920s and 1930s, working alongside the Human Betterment Foundation in Pasadena, he was a staunch, vocal advocate for Californias compulsory sterilization laws targeting individuals deemed unfit (including the mentally ill and intellectually disabled). To Popenoe, these two fields were completely connected: he believed that to preserve and better the human race, the state should prevent unfit individuals from reproducing, while professional counseling should be used to guide fit, stable couples into successful marriages and larger families. Following World War II and the public horror at Nazi eugenics (which had actually used some of Popenoe’s California work as a blueprint), he completely rebranded himself, scrubbing the explicit eugenics language from his work to focus purely on the mainstream, conservative defense of the traditional nuclear family. Under his direction, the Los Angeles institute trained thousands of marriage counselors and members of the clergy, leaving a permanent stamp on how relationship counseling developed in mid-century America. For audiences today who didnt live through the 1960s, it can be difficult to grasp just how seismic the generation gap actually was. It wasnt just a difference in musical tastes or clothing; it was a fundamental fracturing of how two generations viewed reality, morality, and the American Dream. Produced at the very precipice of this cultural shift, The Parents (1964) serves as a living time capsule. Here is how the film vividly captures that historical divide for a modern viewer: The documentary catches a raw, transitional moment in American history. Shaped by the hardships of the Great Depression and the strict conformity of the post-WWII era, they prioritized stability, traditional gender roles, financial security, and respect for authority. To them, the nuclear family was the ultimate achievement. The first wave of baby boomers, growing up in unprecedented postwar affluence. Free from the immediate struggle for survival, they began questioning the very foundations of their parents lives—asking whether corporate security, suburban compliance, and rigid social norms were actually fulfilling. By capturing real families on location, it documented: Genuine scenes where parents and teenagers speak entirely past one another, trapped by a lack of shared vocabulary for the changing world. The film reveals how the pressure of maintaining the perfect 1950s-style household was fracturing adult relationships from the inside out, exposing an undercurrent of anxiety and disillusionment. In 1964, the massive sociopolitical upheavals of the late 60s (the height of the counterculture, widespread anti-war protests, and radical social movements) were still on the horizon. The Parents is remarkable because it catches the spark before the explosion. It documents the quiet, localized friction at the kitchen table that would soon spill out into the streets of America. The Show explored how traditional 1950s/1960s American family values were beginning to clash with the independent, changing perspectives of the younger generation. Filmed on location with real families, the documentary captured marriages and parent-child relationships under strain, documenting real-time struggles and unfiltered conversations. It caught the exact cultural inflection point just as the broader sociopolitical upheavals of the 1960s were beginning to fracture the conventional American Dream family structure.$
