Welcome Friends, welcome back to the kitchen and The Old Cookbook Show! Today, we’re diving into a 1942 classic from Duncan Hines' "Adventures in Good Cooking"—a collection of recipes from some of the best restaurants he visited while traveling across the U.S. and Canada in the 1930s and '40s.
We're making Corn Pudding, a simple and comforting savory custard that works as a perfect side dish. This recipe is quick to prepare, uses just a few pantry staples, and can be easily customized—think paprika, jalapeños, or even cheese for an extra layer of flavor! But will it win over someone who doesn’t like creamed corn? Watch and find out!
Deep South "Cawn Puddin"
(Serves 6)
INGREDIENTS:
1 #2 can cream style corn
¾ quart whole milk
6 eggs
2 tablespoons sugar
pinch salt
2 tablespoons corn starch
DIRECTIONS
Mix all ingredients, beating eggs before add-ing. Mix corn starch with enough cold water to make smooth paste before adding corn. Pour into greased casserole.
Bake in 300º for 30 minutes or until the consistency of custard.
Old Southern Tea Room, Vicksburg, Mississippi
In the video I cut the recipe in half - we didn’t need that much corn pudding.

![Sweet Potato Layer Cake | Brown Butter Frosting Recipe
This sweet potato layer cake recipe is a game-changer! Today in the Glen And Friends kitchen, I’m taking a classic recipe and simplifying it to create a moist, dense, and flavorful cake that anyone can make. The star of the show isnt just the roasted sweet potatoes—its the incredible brown butter cream cheese frosting that brings it all together.
Ill walk you through the process of browning butter (and why that quiet moment in the pan is so important!), roasting the sweet potatoes for maximum flavor, and assembling a perfect two-layer cake. We also discuss why egg size might not be as critical as some recipes claim and how to customize your spices—whether you prefer cloves, nutmeg, or a standard pumpkin pie spice.
Ingredients:
For the Cake: Butter, white sugar, brown sugar, flour, baking powder, salt, ground cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg (or pumpkin pie spice), roasted sweet potatoes, eggs, and vanilla.
For the Brown Butter Frosting: Browned butter, icing sugar, salt, vanilla, whipping cream, and cream cheese.
