Is it just me, or does autumn feel like a time when history breathes a little closer to us? 🍂
In today’s film, we step into Arthur’s home, a chap I met quite organically when visiting a miniature railway: youtube.com/watch?v=sHufIW9ZDcQ&t=48s
My journey today is to uncover a quietly astonishing piece of musical history — a 1924 Ampico reproducing piano, an instrument that doesn’t just play notes, but the very performances of pianists long since passed.
As the keys move on their own, guided by the touch of artists from a century ago, we find ourselves listening to echoes of another time — a ghostly duet between the living and the dead.
Arthur also shares the fascinating inner workings of this early “recording” technology, the pneumatic heart that brings these long-lost performances back to life, and even introduces us to the piano’s ''portable'' cousin, the push-up pianola, dating back to the late 1800s.
