At our monthly sing-around at the sheltered accommodation at Kerroo Glass in Ramsey, a member of the audience, Betty Quayle, lent me an old booklet of poems written by a Miss Kathleen Faragher, the publication dated 1954 and presented to Betty in 5th April 1955.
I have taken the liberty of setting a few of these poems to music, this being the first poem in the booklet. The title of the poem is "Land of My Birth", not to be confused by the title of the Manx National Anthem, "O Land of Our Birth".
The booklet has the following Foreword written by His Honour:
The Deemster Sir Percy Cowley, C. B. E.
I respond with great pleasure to your request that I should write a short Foreword to the forth-coming publication of the Poems of Miss Kathleen Faragher.
These Poems have, as they appeared in the "Ramsey Courier," given great pleasure to Manx people everywhere, and I am glad to think that an opportunity will now be afforded to bring them to the notice of a wider field.
Miss Faragher's dialect poems have faithfully portrayed many sides of Manx character, wit and humour, and I have been very much impressed with some of her descriptive poems, particularly those dealing with Manx scenery. I would specially refer to "Dhoon Glen in June," "Ballure River," "Ballaglass Glen," and "Land of My Birth."
Miss Faragher's poems make a very wide appeal to Manx men and women everywhere and will bring back happy memories of the Land of their Fathers.
I wish the publication every possible success.
