The experiment was to create a very minimalist piece of drone music with tonal fluctuations based on tape transport inaccuracies. 12 sine waves at various set frequencies and set amplitudes were recorded onto the tapes. Since tape deck transports are not very stable, the two decks’ speeds wobble a bit, and drift out of sync from each other, causing the various frequencies to add and cancel in an unpredictable pattern.
