This information shook me to the core.
Christianity and queerness are bound together by a kind of spiritual necrophilia - a love for those who are dead and gone. For so long, as a young teen, Sufjan's music was a way for me to mediate those connections. I am no longer a Christian, but that love for the dead remains.

Made by S.Centralia Fire | line riderSeptember Hofmann2023-07-28 | A fire burns in the coal mines beneath Centralia, PA. Over the course of 70 years, this fire has continued to burn, slowly reducing the city which once lived atop it into an abandoned ruin.
Often, we think of fire as something quick, something fleeting, a powerful force which might spring up at any moment. But fire is slow, too, creeping beneath the surface. Fire is embers, toxic fumes, greenhouse gasses. And it is trauma, it is our generational systems of violence. And one day, the things that burn within us will crack open the earth and spill out as flame as ash as memories.
"It's not our fault!" we will say. "Please spare us!"
But we will still have to live in the world that fire has made.

How do artists show care towards one another across the distances that art ostensibly tries to bridge? I am still figuring this out. Like "Voice in Headphones" this track is a meditation on and interpretation of another person's artwork--specifically, that of Jade's line rider work. And in the spirit of her artmaking practice, this track is also dedicated to and intended for specific people in my life. You know who you are. I love you. This track is kind of a spiritual sequel to my track "BELLS": youtube.com/watch?v=kbxtgggGyKI BELLS was the sixth track I ever made, and it was the first one that I felt was artistically cohesive and accomplished something interesting in line rider. To celebrate two years of making things in line rider, I wanted to dwell in the aesthetic space "BELLS" carved out for a little while again, and to reflect on what that that track means to me today. The people who make and enjoy line rider tracks have come to mean so much to me, and I am grateful how this community of artists has help me heal and grow in ways I could not have even understood just two years ago, back when I thought of Line Rider more as a one-off hobby that I would someday soon abandon rather than what looks to be a a crucial part of this chapter in my life's story. Special thanks to my mother, who has been a major contributing factor to the creation of the series, and who I quote in this track.Either - Line RiderSeptember Hofmann2022-08-02 | "Either" is my attempt at a critical re-analysis of quirk and its history via the medium of quirk. Instead of prioritizing tricks or certain idealized types of movement, this "Omnitrack" (haha) focuses on what I find most valuable from quirk tracks: unpredictable or subversive movement (what I personally call "jokes"), the partitioning of odd shapes in space via movement, and the visual component of quirk lines conveying emotional information. I tried to flip many values other tracks emphasize on their head: roughness and disgusting/uncomfortable movement ("flow killers") over satisfying movement; "bad" "weak" or "unbalanced" movement types over "good" "strong" or "balanced" ones; readability and subtlety over impressiveness and bombast; etc.
I consider "Either" an Omnitrack of a heretical sort; the idea of an Omnitrack is kind of pointless and vain after the release of the finished version of Omniverse II, which is kind of the point! And yet I also wanted to incorporate different movement types in order to vary up the hisotrical Omnitrack repertoire of enshrined skills: along with manuals, manuquirk, alt quirk, georgio-style quirk, xy, and flings, "either" also incorporates "emotional flatsled", remount quirk, and offsled. Intentional omissions include kramuals and gigaquirk/10pcs. Sections are also combined heterogeneously, undermining the historical notion of omniquirk being made up of distinct "sections", in this track's small and insignificant way.
The final section of this track includes a new rider state that was discovered by me (!!!) while playing around with gravity during the development of Surreal!st Movement, pt 1. If the sled is in fakie and Bosh is in a specific position, she will continually try to remount but be unable to, creating a new stable position continually locked in the "remounting" state. This "remount fakie" is a pretty weird state to put the rider in, and its peculiar bounciness, ability to have bosh sled only on her hands and feet (a "hofmanual" /s), and relative fragility made it a good fit for the end of this track. My discovery of this position represents to me the still-unexplored horizons of movement left in line rider, and is a personal culmination of my investigations into janky movement so far.
This is technically the beta for this track. A scened version of "Either" will be released as a follow up, and will consist of my personal investigations into old-school (pre music-sync) line rider scenery.

In 1968, Austin Wiggin, forced his three daughters--Helen, Dot, and Betty--to start a rock band.
Austin chose their name for them. He called them “The Shaggs.”
Austin believed wholeheartedly in a prophecy predicting that his daughters would become famous musicians.
He pulled Helen, Dot, and Betty out of High School, gave them instruments, and told them to make music.
The result was the Shaggs' only studio album, “Philosophy of the World.”
Songs like “My Pal Foot Foot” were the result.

I tell it also as a narrative about anticolonial struggle, the refusal of legibility, and an art of unbecoming. This is a story of art without markets, drama without a script, narrative without progress. The queer art of failure turns on the impossible, the improbable, the unlikely, and the unremarkable. It quietly loses, and in losing it imagines other goals for life, for love, for art, and for being." -- Jack Halberstam, The Queer Art of Failure
