Indian nightlife began to change at the turn of the century when small groups of artists and creatives across the country found ways to showcase the music and aesthetics they’d witnessed abroad. In Mumbai, it was the Bhavishyavani Future Soundz collective who helped kickstart the evolution of the city’s club culture. A multimedia collective composed of amateur DJs, film and design professionals, Bhavishyavani Future Soundz threw their first party on May 13, 1999. Over the years visual themes like traditional Indian weddings or politics would mix with sets of jungle, dub techno and live performances by then-upcoming Indian electronic acts such as MIDIval Punditz. The son of a record store owner, Pereira got his break in the city’s burgeoning nightclub scene while still a teenager, eventually becoming the resident at institutions such as Plateau and Kremlin. Then, in 2003, he teamed up with Scooter for a remix of the 1997 track “I Like It Loud,” which hit the Top 40 charts in Austria, Germany and Hungary. Recognized by some as one of electronic music’s most unsung heroes, Acardipane’s popularity has continued to wax and wane in the years since. His career began in the late ’60s as a jazz musician, playing the violin and saxophone as a member of various orchestras, including ensembles led by Russian jazz stars Oleg Lundstrem and Leonid Utyosov as well as Muslim Magomayev’s State Jazz Orchestra of Azerbaijan. Inspired by Coltrane, Count Basie and Quincy Jones, Chernavsky worked the concert circuit for over a decade before moving into musical direction, composition and production. In the ’80s he emerged as one of Russia’s first modern-day music producers, working with rock and pop groups as well as experimenting with early synthesizer and studio technologies. In 1983 he recorded Banana Islands with Vesyolye Rebyata [Jolly Fellows], one of the first Russian rock albums to gain international attention, and three years later he founded SPM Record, Russia’s first independent music and entertainment company and host of the first discos in Russia, and acted as musical director for the Goodwill Games.Red Bull Music Academy is the educational pillar of the Red Bull Music program. In the early ’80s, Flores teamed up with the late Leonard Roberts to put out records inspired by the early hip-hop jams. This lead to the bootleg Octopus Breakbeats, compiling the breaks DJs had been using to keep dancers moving, and then in 1986 to the Street Beat Records label. Selecting and editing foundational breaks, Flores and Roberts acquired the rights to release these under the Ultimate Breaks & Beats series. Over the next decade the UBB compilations made a seismic impact on how hip-hop was created by providing fodder and inspiration to a new generation of sample-minded producers. The compilations would also play a part in the explosion of jungle and drum & bass in the UK and find their ways into numerous chart hits from Mariah Carey to Hanson. Yet Flores and Roberts remained largely unrecognized for their contribution until decades later. In 1986 they began their now-legendary association with Janet Jackson, producing the Grammy Award-winning LP _Control_, the first of many career-defining efforts over the next three decades. In addition, they have crafted classics for the likes of Force M.D.’s, Sounds of Blackness, New Edition, Human League, George Michael, Usher, and Mary J. Hailing from Okayama, YoshimiO began her career in 1986 with the band U.F.O or Die, a side project of experimental vocalist Yamatsuka Eye, before joining Eye’s Boredoms a year later and eventually becoming one of its longest serving members. She began releasing music under the name Yoshimi P-We (now YoshimiO) in 1993, all the while collaborating across various projects – the experimental ensemble OOIOO, the Saicobab quartet, which fuses Indian raga traditions with punk and electronic music – and with international musicians including Kim Gordon, Mats Gustafsson, Susie Ibarra and Robert Lowe. While best known as a drummer and vocalist, Yokata also plays the trumpet and keyboard and often works in improvisational contexts. YoshimiO sat down with Masaaki Hara at the Cerulean Tower’s Noh Theatre for a rare public lecture as part of the Red Bull Music Festival Tokyo 2019, during which she discussed her influences, prolific career and her unique approach to performance. Named after the abbreviation for the frequency modulation of shortwave radios he used when he first began making music, Einheit immersed himself in the post-punk world of late ’70s Germany before joining Einstürzende Neubauten in the early ’80s as a percussionist. During his time with the influential West Berlin band, Einheit built custom-made instruments, often using metal, and used hammer drills to create new sounds. Live performances would in turn feature dramatic use of the instruments with banging and destruction, which cemented the band’s uncompromising image and set Einheit on his own unique creative path, writing and performing music with unconventional instruments and approaches. Over the past 30 years Einheit has worked both on his own and with others, including bands like Stein, Pan Sonic and Gry, as well as with fellow Neubauten member Alexander Hacke, and also expanded beyond music to theater and radio plays.
