As electronic dance music and rave culture washed over America and England in the ’90s, India still moved to a more traditional nightlife beat that included Goa trance and chart-approved hits. Indian nightlife began to change at the turn of the century when small groups of artists and creatives across the country found ways to showcase the music and aesthetics they’d witnessed abroad. In Mumbai, it was the Bhavishyavani Future Soundz collective who helped kickstart the evolution of the city’s club culture.
A multimedia collective composed of amateur DJs, film and design professionals, Bhavishyavani Future Soundz threw their first party on May 13, 1999. Over the years visual themes like traditional Indian weddings or politics would mix with sets of jungle, dub techno and live performances by then-upcoming Indian electronic acts such as MIDIval Punditz. By combining a love of their hometown and culture with graphic design, music and live performance, this disparate group of idealists showed how a strong visual identity could define a scene and injected a sense of fun and possibility into Mumbai nightlife that is still felt to this day.

In 1980s Lisbon the resident DJ wasn’t simply housewarming for the main act – they were the only act. For António Pereira, AKA DJ Vibe, that meant the ability to stretch selections across genres and styles, entertaining crowds with everything from new wave, disco and slow jams to the new sounds of acid house and rave. The son of a record store owner, Pereira got his break in the city’s burgeoning nightclub scene while still a teenager, eventually becoming the resident at institutions such as Plateau and Kremlin.
In 1993, after close to a decade behind the decks, Pereira teamed up with Rui Da Silva as the Underground Sound of Lisbon, releasing a string of singles on local label Kaos Records. Inspired by the harder and deeper end of house music, the duo’s “So Get Up” would eventually make its way to New York City and into the hands of Junior Vasquez at the Sound Factory. The record became an underground sensation, kickstarting a relationship between the two local scenes that cemented the trance-like tribal sound both would become famous for.

Swedish producer Peder Mannerfelt embraces the versatility of modern production and electronic music through both his collaborations and solo work. Beginning with bad approximations of funk and dreams of drum & bass during high school, Mannerfelt soon realized that the personal computer held more promise than a guitar. Beginning in 2009, he has applied this interest to the more experimental and abstract side of electronic music via Roll The Dice, his duo with Malcolm Pardon, and his own techno-minded alias the Subliminal Kid, as well as contributing production to Fever Ray’s debut album and 2017’s Plunge. Today Mannerfelt runs his own label, exploring contemporary techno, and regularly DJs and performs live.

Following early involvements with rave music, DJing and the DIY underground in her native Providence, RI, Russom studied visual arts and music and began to design and build analog synthesizers, a practice that would become central to her music-making.
Moving to New York City in the late ’90s, she met Delia Gonzalez, a performance artist from Miami with whom she would go on to collaborate both musically and as part of the Black Leotard Front dance troupe. Russom’s work with synthesizers would eventually lead her to meet James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and DFA Records. She helped build much of the technology used by Murphy and the band for productions and live shows, eventually joining LCD Soundsystem in the studio and on the road. Aïsha Devi uses her voice to break through the din of our current musical moment. Following early bedroom experiments in electronic and dance music in the 2000s, the Swiss-Nepalese singer and producer went through a personal transformation that led her to leave the past behind and embrace her birth name. In the early 2010s she set up the Danse Noire label with some friends and began to explore the potentials of electronic music in combination with meditation, philosophy and the scientific properties of frequencies. Using her voice, smeared with delay and reverb of unearthly proportions, and the Roland JP-8080 – a synth most synonymous with trance music – as primary tools, Devi has been writing and performing music that aims to break down barriers and induce transcendence in her audience.

German producer/DJ Marc Acardipane is a man of many aliases. Chief among them is The Mover, under which he creates weighty, deceptively simple electronic music that sits at the intersection of hardcore and techno. No matter the name, he’s weathered the peaks and valleys of an over 30-year career. That career began in 1989 when he and Thorsten Lambart founded the label and electronic music group Planet Core Productions (PCP). At the peak of the hardcore scene in the ’90s, Acardipane tracks “Stereo Murder” (as Marshall Masters) and “Six Million Ways to Die” (as Turbulence) played in clubs all over the Netherlands. Then, in 2003, he teamed up with Scooter for a remix of the 1997 track “I Like It Loud,” which hit the Top 40 charts in Austria, Germany and Hungary. Recognized by some as one of electronic music’s most unsung heroes, Acardipane’s popularity has continued to wax and wane in the years since. Following the newly mastered reissue of 2002’s _Frontal Frustrations_ and his latest release as The Mover, _Undetected Act from the Gloom Chamber_, Acardipane may finally get his proper due.

Famed Russian composer and producer Yury Chernavsky discusses his early years on the Russian jazz circuit, discovering production and electronics and creating new music behind the Iron Curtain. #RBMA
TOPICS: 4:14 - Early years as a jazz musician and orchestra member 10:28 - Muslim Magomayev and experimentation in the Russian jazz world 25:53 - The end of the jazz era and moving into production 39:28 - Electronic experimentation and Banana Islands
When Yury Chernavsky began work as a music producer in late ’70s USSR, there was little around him to draw inspiration from and so he looked to the advances and innovations happening in the West. His career began in the late ’60s as a jazz musician, playing the violin and saxophone as a member of various orchestras, including ensembles led by Russian jazz stars Oleg Lundstrem and Leonid Utyosov as well as Muslim Magomayev’s State Jazz Orchestra of Azerbaijan. Inspired by Coltrane, Count Basie and Quincy Jones, Chernavsky worked the concert circuit for over a decade before moving into musical direction, composition and production. In the ’80s he emerged as one of Russia’s first modern-day music producers, working with rock and pop groups as well as experimenting with early synthesizer and studio technologies. In 1983 he recorded Banana Islands with Vesyolye Rebyata [Jolly Fellows], one of the first Russian rock albums to gain international attention, and three years later he founded SPM Record, Russia’s first independent music and entertainment company and host of the first discos in Russia, and acted as musical director for the Goodwill Games.

Hip-hop pioneer Breakbeat Lou discusses his relationship with pioneers such as Scott La Rock and the DITC crew, why UBB and Street Beat Records came to be and how he navigates the ever-changing waters of hip-hop, both musically and culturally.
TOPICS: 05:24 - Beginnings as a DJ and crate-digger 12:27 - Meeting and working with Scott La Rock 20:44 - Street Beat Records and the Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilations 26:09 - The story of how the Amen break ended up on UBB 31:13 - Working with Diggin' In The Crates 39:53 - Working with Opio from Souls of Mischief
Growing up in New York City in the ’70s, Louis Flores came to hip-hop like so many other Latino kids his age: by rushing to contribute as it sprung up around him, first as a dancer and then as a DJ and producer. In the early ’80s, Flores teamed up with the late Leonard Roberts to put out records inspired by the early hip-hop jams. This lead to the bootleg Octopus Breakbeats, compiling the breaks DJs had been using to keep dancers moving, and then in 1986 to the Street Beat Records label. Selecting and editing foundational breaks, Flores and Roberts acquired the rights to release these under the Ultimate Breaks & Beats series.
Over the next decade the UBB compilations made a seismic impact on how hip-hop was created by providing fodder and inspiration to a new generation of sample-minded producers. The compilations would also play a part in the explosion of jungle and drum & bass in the UK and find their ways into numerous chart hits from Mariah Carey to Hanson. Yet Flores and Roberts remained largely unrecognized for their contribution until decades later. Flores left the music industry in 1995, having worked as a DJ, editor and producer, before returning in the late 2000s when the importance of UBB, and his work editing the breaks, was brought back to light by fans such as Kenny Dope.

The Toronto-based, Colombia-born artist made her debut in 2010 with Color, a collection of songs written in Baranquilla that pulled from youthful experiences with metal, identity, motherhood and, quite literally, finding her voice. In the following years she moved from London, Ontario to Toronto and studied art criticism and music production.
She delved further into the potentials of using her voice in combination with loop pedals and electronic production and connected with local musicians, such as Kvesche Bijons-Ebacher and Blake Blakely, who helped Pimienta fashion the sound of her second album, 2016’s La Papessa. That album, self-produced and full of layered compositions, from the sonics to the subject matter, won the 2017 Polaris Music Prize and received numerous public accolades from both Canadian and international media.
In 2018, she signed with American label Anti, reissuing La Papessa in anticipation of her new record, Miss Colombia, which continues to explore Afro-Colombian music traditions and ideas of ownership and identity through Pimienta’s unique lens.

As well as pioneering the minimal techno sound with his 1994 LP Minimal Nation, he’s released on techno mainstays such as Metroplex and Jeff Mills’ Axis label, set up the Hardwax label and operates seminal techno label M-Plant – through which he’s released dozens of his own records, under his own name and as Floorplan. 2013’s Paradise LP as Floorplan was a volt-face in Hood’s musical story; the soulfulness of his minimal sound given new, hot-blooded life. It's this new life that keeps him a key figure in techno today.

Japanese musician and vocalist YoshimiO revisits key moments in her career and discusses her approach to collaboration, musical training and performance. ► redbullmusicacademy.com/lectures/yoshimio
Drummer, vocalist and serial collaborator Yoshimi Yokata AKA YoshimiO has been an inescapable presence in the Japanese and international experimental rock and avant-garde scene for over 30 years. Hailing from Okayama, YoshimiO began her career in 1986 with the band U.F.O or Die, a side project of experimental vocalist Yamatsuka Eye, before joining Eye’s Boredoms a year later and eventually becoming one of its longest serving members.
She began releasing music under the name Yoshimi P-We (now YoshimiO) in 1993, all the while collaborating across various projects – the experimental ensemble OOIOO, the Saicobab quartet, which fuses Indian raga traditions with punk and electronic music – and with international musicians including Kim Gordon, Mats Gustafsson, Susie Ibarra and Robert Lowe. While best known as a drummer and vocalist, Yokata also plays the trumpet and keyboard and often works in improvisational contexts.
YoshimiO sat down with Masaaki Hara at the Cerulean Tower’s Noh Theatre for a rare public lecture as part of the Red Bull Music Festival Tokyo 2019, during which she discussed her influences, prolific career and her unique approach to performance.

From creating drones in Ableton to using a metal spring as a bass and a metal sheet as percussion, FM Einheit shows how to tap into the freedom of music as a language.
Named after the abbreviation for the frequency modulation of shortwave radios he used when he first began making music, Einheit immersed himself in the post-punk world of late ’70s Germany before joining Einstürzende Neubauten in the early ’80s as a percussionist. During his time with the influential West Berlin band, Einheit built custom-made instruments, often using metal, and used hammer drills to create new sounds. Live performances would in turn feature dramatic use of the instruments with banging and destruction, which cemented the band’s uncompromising image and set Einheit on his own unique creative path, writing and performing music with unconventional instruments and approaches. Over the past 30 years Einheit has worked both on his own and with others, including bands like Stein, Pan Sonic and Gry, as well as with fellow Neubauten member Alexander Hacke, and also expanded beyond music to theater and radio plays.

Yuzo Koshiro is a Japanese composer, arranger, and programmer whose contributions helped change video game music. Having discovered video games and their music at an early age, Koshiro learnt to program using an NEC PC-8801 before landing his first jobs in the industry in early 1980s Tokyo, scoring the background music for games like Bosconian, Tower of Druaga and Sega’s 1987 hit Shinobi. Breaking away from the conventions of early BGM soundtracks, which favored pop, rock and jazz, Koshiro setup his own company, Ancient, and quickly established himself as a pioneer in the field thanks to his programming knowledge and early mastery of FM sound chips. He made his biggest impact with the soundtrack to Sega’s early ’90s beat’em up series Streets Of Rage, taking cues from dance music including techno, house and drum & bass and as a result influencing generations of fans and artists such as Just Blaze, Flying Lotus and Ikonika. Songwriter and producer Scott Storch is no stranger to success. After being drafted into hip-hop band The Roots in 1994 upon moving to Philadelphia, the group's first album Do You Want More?!!!??! leaned heavily on Storch's distinctive use of the Fender Rhodes and would help define their sound. Storch's playing would eventually lead him to Dr. Dre, for whom he would come up with the classic piano riff found on “Still D.R.E.” From there, Storch would go on to feature in and produce hit records for the likes of Beyoncé, Fat Joe and Justin Timberlake, becoming one of the most sought after producers of the mid-2000s in the process.
His meteoric rise in the industry had its downsides though, the party lifestyle eventually leading to Storch entering rehab in 2009 and filing for bankruptcy in 2015. Since then, Storch has re-entered the music industry with more drive and inspiration than ever, working with some the most exciting names in modern rap, including Young Thug, Russ and Trippie Red.

A classically trained prodigy who began playing the cello at age seven, Philadelphia native Larry Gold has worked on countless hit records over the past four decades. Throughout the ’60s, ’70s and early ’80s he was a member of MFSB, the legendary house band for Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff’s Philadelphia International Records, and helped shape “The Sound of Philadelphia,” as it came to be known, via classic recordings by the O’Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the Delfonics, Teddy Pendergrass, Billy Paul and others. By the late ’90s, however, Gold would truly come into his own as the go-to string arranger of the modern R&B and hip-hop era. His orchestral contributions to Brandy & Monica’s 1998 smash “The Boy Is Mine” set off a series of genre-defining recordings, including classics by the Roots, Erykah Badu, Jay Z, Justin Timberlake, Jill Scott, Common and Kanye West.

Nile Rodgers’ life story reads like the stuff of fiction. Born to a family of drug-addicted bohemians in New York, he hung out with jazz stars and Hollywood superstars as a kid and went on to forge his own legend as the driving force behind Chic. His band defined the disco era like no other, but when the “disco sucks” backlash hit, he sidestepped into production to make classic albums with Diana Ross, Sister Sledge, David Bowie, Duran Duran and Madonna. Recently recovered from a battle with cancer, Nile Rodgers has a book out and a story to tell.

Sounwave and Tae Beast are producers, helping to shape albums by artists like Kendrick Lamar, Ab-Soul, Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock as well as working with the likes of Mac Miller and St. Vincent. MixedByAli, the man with the golden ears, is an engineer who is equally prolific, contributing to projects by artists ranging from Danny Brown and Childish Gambino to YG. Together they’ve earned and won multiple nominations and awards, including Grammys and Oscars – Sounwave was nominated for the latter in 2019 for Best Song, for co-writing “All the Stars” from the Black Panther soundtrack.
