As long as they are sharp, why stress about excess effort? The medium you use doesn't matter to the steel. But it might matter to you. Depending upon your laziness quotient. Lazy sharpening does require simple body mechanics but in the end it sure saves time, effort and results in just as good an edge.

I prefer a wood hand plane for smoothing due to it's tuneability. You can do things in wood that are hard to accomplish in iron that affect that tactile nature of it's use. In this video I show you how to "tune" a Krenov style wooden hand plane to improve it's feel and performance. Same techniques can be use on other styles of wooden hand planes.

Everything but a few yards of stone was leftovers from past projects which themselves were made from junkyard salvage. So from the landscaping to welding I'm in for less than $200. It was a fun build and something I'll get use of 4-5 times a week as I like to grab a tea around sunset, put on a podcast or news, and punch holes in paper. It's a relaxing hobby I picked up after COVID started.
So I hope you enjoy watching how I build "The World's Greatest Backyard Plinking Bench / Table".

Pallet wood offers the opportunity to build such a dog house / shed as the only cost are nails/screws and cosmetics. Also this simple design could be modified as a dog house or shelter for goats, chickens, ducks, Chupacabra's, or garden equipment. If you take your time you could likely finish it in 3-4 hours.
I used a jigsaw, miter saw, circular saw and nail gun but if you are limited in tools I promise you a hand saw and hammer is all you really need.

I normally dislike pallet wood and pallet wood projects. But even my snooty brain understands there is a place for such material. Unfortunately I go through waves where I do a lot of those types of projects and need to break down large swaths of pallets into project material.
In this video I try some "new to me" techniques and tools to reduce my frustrations at this process and improve efficiency so time is not wasted. I'll also cover the ways I've disassembled pallets in the past.

Part of my upcoming year I plan on downsizing from a nice shared 450 sq/ft shop to the back of a pickup. I think people working out of garages, sheds, spare rooms, closets, carports and driveways share my predicament. What we all need is a work shop we can take-down and put up easily. Something that is convenient to use yet flexible enough for lots of different arenas of the craft. I could see someone with an inexpensive "construction lumber shelf" in their garage having all the space they'd need if their workshop was of popup variety. So venture along with me as I prepare solutions for the lathe, table saw, grinder, thicknesser, hand tools, hand power tools, band saw, oscillating sander, miter saw, scroll saw and many more.

So I acquired a Stihl 661 and a Granberg Alaskan Mill/Rail kit. Here we are getting the whole setup assembled and working on a giant 30" diameter tree trunk we had wasting away in the back yard.
The advantage of milling it into slabs instead of bucking it into individual bowl blanks is that if it does crack you'll only lose the ends. Bucked you'd end up losing the whole blank. Plus it leaves open options for other use down the road. It can stay in slab form for years properly stored and stacked.

So out of a pecan log I finish turned these bowls. This log was very dry to begin with but as usual I let these bowls sit for almost a month before putting them up for sale. Once turned bowls will warp which is why this run was very thin bowls as that allows movement with less chance of cracking. None of these bowls cracked though they all moved out of round.
Pecan is an especially hard wood when dry. It's nickname is pecancrete.
Finish was simple Walnut Oil & Beeswax.
