Why exactly is it so hard to learn Ancient Greek? While learning Latin poses no small challenge, those who have learned the first language of the Romans often find the Hellenic tongue to be strikingly difficult by comparison, for reasons never quite clear. In this video, I summarize all the greatest challenges and pitfalls of studying Ancient Greek, I explain why Ancient Greek is much harder to learn than Latin for the majority of people, much more than they expect, at least, and most importantly I tell you how you can remedy these problems and become a fluent reader of Ancient Greek, once and for all.

Intro and outro music: Overture of Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) by MozartWhy “Traditional” Methods Don’t Work for Latin or Greek (or any language!) 2nd Language AcquisitionpolýMATHY2024-03-22 | Teaching Latin and Ancient Greek in most countries involves the learning of grammatical rules and the translation of ancient texts with a dictionary, but this leads to very little real acquisition of the language. While the grammar-translation method is thought of as "traditional," it is actually a novelty of the past two centuries, and was once common in the teaching of modern languages as well, but thanks to the studies of the past 50 years, grammar-translation has been discarded as unhelpful at best, and harmful at worst, at least in the teaching of modern languages. No language can be acquired via grammar translation, ancient or modern, and this video will tell you why this is. In it, I respond to some thougthful comments that challenge these ideas, and offer my responses publicly.

What is the controversy between Greece and North Macedonia? Why do they both claim Alexander the Great as part of their culture, and deny the patrimony of Ancient Macedonia to one another? This video is intended to explain to my audience NOT from the Balkans why this feud persists, and why so many crazy comments appeared on the Ancient Macedonian language video (this one: youtu.be/IULnf22JEzw ).
NOTA BENE: If you’re new to this topic, I recommend reseaching more on your own, since my presentation here is rather superficial. In this video I attempted to show three points of view: the Greek perspective, the North Macedonian perspective, and the perspective of an outsider — outsiders like me see these controversies as pretty silly, and I pointed to my own supercilious reaction in this video, to make a point that the Macedonia naming dispute is very important to a lot of people. I encourage you to look into the facts and the deeds around the dispute before coming to your own conclusion.
