While the grammar-translation method is thought of as "traditional," it is actually a novelty of the past two centuries, and was once common in the teaching of modern languages as well, but thanks to the studies of the past 50 years, grammar-translation has been discarded as unhelpful at best, and harmful at worst, at least in the teaching of modern languages.
