Why “Traditional” Methods Don’t Work for Latin or Greek (or any language!) 2nd Language Acquisition polýMATHY 2024-03-22 | Teaching Latin and Ancient Greek in most countries involves the learning of grammatical rules and the translation of ancient texts with a dictionary, but this leads to very little real acquisition of the language. While the grammar-translation method is thought of as "traditional," it is actually a novelty of the past two centuries, and was once common in the teaching of modern languages as well, but thanks to the studies of the past 50 years, grammar-translation has been discarded as unhelpful at best, and harmful at worst, at least in the teaching of modern languages.
