This was released as TSB 100-001 almost 40 years ago. The early M100s had too large a currently limiting resistor in the RS-232 output lines which caused compatibility problems with some other TRS-80 products as well as other RS-232 devices. We discover what the problem is, we apply the modification as per the bulletin, and test the results to see how it performs. We also find this same modification also applies to the NEC-8201a which uses the exact same RS-232 circuit design and has the same problem. The Model 4P is a smaller, portable version of the Model 4 which was the last of the classic TRS-80 computers. We’ll refurbish the original Tandon TM50-1 floppy drive, test it with a Super Card Pro and then (eventually) make a bootable floppy from an image. As part of this process we even manage to set up a Gotek for the 4P as well. After getting the machine booting, we’ll explore the Model 1-4 Diagnostic Disk that Radio Shack made for technicians back in the day. Then we’ll expand the RAM to a whopping 128K and let the RAM test run for hours.In the next video we’ll concentrate on the cosmetics and try to get rid of the jaundiced look of the plastic case. Most all manufacturers added keying slots to the edge connector on the PCB. 3D Modeling and Printing Vintage Computer Parts. A simple case study. I recently needed to model/print a similar cover for a Tandy PC-4/Casio FP-100 and documented the process in this video. It is longer than I had originally intended but a quick poll on Twitter revealed that 9-10 folks would prefer the longer video with more detail. Here we try to cover the process of measuring a part up, creating a sketch by hand to use as a reference and then formulating a plan on how to 3D model the part. We then create a 3D model, learn about using parameters and finally we slice it and then print it out. It was a good example of the benefits of taking a break when you’re heading down the wrong path and things are starting to look like they are getting complicated. The initial problem of not booting had a simple cause, battery corrosion but finding it was a challenge. Flat Flex Cable Repair - Can we save our aging FFCs? These cables are made the same way as flexible PCBs but have the contact fingers exposed on the ends and typically some sort of plastic stiffener sheet glued on.With age the fingers sometimes come loose which leaves your repair stuck until you can locate a good used cable. Many of the cables and connectors they used are no longer available as new replacement parts. So, a damaged cable can leave an otherwise working system out of commission. Being faced this this problem recently I tried to come up with a way to repair these cables.
