If you grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, then there's perhaps no synthesizer more iconic to you than the Roland JV, XV, and XP series. Affordable, expandable, and capable, they were used in everything from kids TV shows to the most memorable video games of the time, such as Castlevania: SotN, Command & Conquer, GoldenEye N64, Halo, MechWarrior 2, Mega Man on PSX, Metal Gear Solid, Persona 1 & 2, StarCraft, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 2, Xenogears, and many, many more.
But are they worth buying now, over 20 years since the original JV-1080 was released? In this review, I take a look at everything from the different models, to the synthesis features, to the much beloved SR-JV80 and SRX expansions so you can decide for yourself if these synths are what you need!
And a HUGE thank you to everyone who let me use their video in mine. It's seriously, seriously appreciated and makes my job way easier. Here's a list of content used in order of appearance:

This album is a collection of various songs I've composed over the years but not released collected before; some are from failed game projects, some are things I wrote but never published, and others were created for many other purposes. They're all little fragments of projects, ideas, and plans that may or may not have come to be, but I had fun writing them all.

While perhaps not as famous as Roland's Sound Canvas line of products, the Yamaha MUs were their greatest competitors and many would argue their superiors. With analog inputs, extensive effects sections, hundreds of sounds, simple and powerful user interfaces, and great expandability, the MU series was a worthy desktop MIDI module in its day... but does it still hold up now? In this video, I go into extensive detail to help you decide whether one of the fifteen MU models is right for you!

I created this so I could learn the ropes of the XP-30 in an easy environment. I took the original .MID file, made a performance on the XP-30, and made some (very drastic) edits to the .MID; namely adding more dynamics, changing the octave of some channels, re-doing all of the volume balancing, and a bunch of other tweaks to make it work. Normally, I make my own MIDI files but there wasn't any reason to here.

When it comes to the early days of computer music, there are few pieces of hardware that define it better than the original Roland Sound Canvas. Since 1991, the SC-55 has served as the de facto General MIDI and Roland GS sound module. With three major revisions in the Sound Canvas series and nearly three decades of time later though, does the SC-55 still hold up or is it yet another piece of outdated tech? Watch and find out!

In this retrospective/review, I take a look at the Roland SC-8850, the first synth to feature USB support (according to Roland advertising) - checking out many of its sounds, features, and quirks, and ultimately decide whether or not it's worth checking out nearly 20 years later!
All music in this episode was played back on a Roland SC-8850 or compatible.

Fun effects on this one, including pitch bending the drums, cutoff filtering (intro pads), editing the delay effects, and using distortion on the drums to simulate the crunchiness of the original FM drums.
In today's video, I take a detailed look at the Roland SC-88 Pro (later re-released in new forms as the SC-880 and SK-88 Pro), a classic 1996 desktop music synthesizer that has been featured in games such as Final Fantasy X, Ys I & II Complete, Thunder Force V, Touhou EoSD, and various Nintendo games like the GBA Pokemon titles, and used by artists such as Rei Harakami.
Before the days of VSTs and DAWs, making studio quality music from the comfort of your computer wasn't as easy as it is now. You needed some sort of hardware synthesizer, and one of the most famous families to cater to the prosumer home market were the Roland Sound Canvases. With the 88 Pro Boasting over 1,000 instrument patches and over 40 drum kits, is it still as easy to use and worthwhile today as it was over 20 years ago? Watch and find out in this detailed review!

Vocaloid - perhaps the most well known singing speech synthesizer of all time, it's gone down in history as one of the most unique and interesting musical experiments out there. But it wasn't the first one by a long shot, and it wasn't even Yamaha's first foray. Say hello to the 100% synthesized PLG100-SG!

In today's popular internet culture, MIDI is often misunderstood and misrepresented in a variety of ways; some people think it's a particular sound, some think it's only good for making corny renditions of pop music, and others just don't really know what it is. In this first episode of Sound Profile, I take a look at a brief history of MIDI, talk about the standardization of it in video gaming (General MIDI), and hopefully clear up just exactly what MIDI and a MIDI file is.
