Klapers DHA Endorsement: Whats the Evidence? VegSource 2023-04-12 | My old friend, Dr. Michael Klaper, recently released a video on the topic of DHA and brain health. His new video is an “update” to his DHA videos from 2019 and 2020. Even though there is no new research to support his position, Dr. Klaper's recommendations for DHA supplementation are now the complete opposite of what he was advising people just a few years ago. Dr. Klaper also seems to have taken on a new enemy - the vegan diet. Despite having passionately recommended it for people of all ages for well over 3 decades, he now describes a 100% plant-based diet without supplemental DHA as a potentially dangerous “experiment,” never before undertaken in human history.But the truth is this is not a controversial issue. Dementia specialty organizations, composed of actual experts and researchers on dementia from across the globe - universally agree that neither DHA deficiency nor a vegan diet are risk factors for dementia. They also recommend against taking DHA supplements to prevent dementia.Ironically, the dose of DHA supplement that Dr. Klaper is recommending to “protect the brain” (and the dose that is in Dr. Fuhrman’s DHA supplement) has basically no chance of actually getting to your brain. This was recently demonstrated by brain researchers at the Keck School of Medicine at USC. They used spinal taps to see how much DHA actually makes it into your brain when you take popular DHA supplements. The answer is - very likely zero. You can raise your blood levels, but that has no impact on your brain. How Doctors Trick You - Dr. McDougall VegSource 2021-02-04 | Today we bring you - another golden gem of a video from John McDougall MD, this time discussing disease mongering. Disease mongering is what the pharmaceutical and medical device businesses do in order to make money - to push questionable drugs, surgeries, potions, gimmicks and generally unnecessary (but profitable) treatments. The first step in disease mongering is to create a definition for a disease that will encompass a large portion of the population - be that a market for osteoporosis drugs, cholesterol drugs, vaccines - or other unnecessary treatments. Doctors then sell the relative rather than absolute benefits. It's a great way to fool patients, to make them think there is a huge benefit - when the benefit is actually miniscule and the product possibly dangerous. Plant-based doctors focused on health - are called "lifestyle medicine" doctors, as opposed to "conventional medicine" doctors. Conventional medicine doctors (vegan or otherwise) frequently dismiss or ridicule research from actual plant-based researchers. Longtime plant-based researchers are high profile doctors - who've fought "the system" for decades. Over time these doctors have repeatedly proven they could reverse a variety of chronic diseases, with a specific plant-based diet. The message from today's video? Be careful - and skeptical - of the new breed of know-it-all vegan docs - many of whom earn their livings from conventional medicine, even though they may pose as lifestyle doctors on social media. 🤷♂️Also - Anthony Lim MD JD - is a doctor. When Supplements Harm VegSource 2020-02-15 | Longterm vegans should supplement Vitamin B12 - yes, I agree. But it turns out taking B12 has possible risks, like some other supplements. Today we look at research showing the potential problems of raising your B12 blood levels too high, which could include death. If you're a longterm vegan, DO take B12, but be careful not to go hog wild. I discuss why I've temporarily stopped taking B12, and am monitoring my levels. My decision to coast for a bit is based on recent research, discussed in this video.If you adhere to a vegan diet, B12 supplementation is prudent. I also recommend having yourself tested for vitamin B12 deficiency every few years. The most appropriate test for evaluating B12 status is the urine test for methylmalonic acid (MMA). Elevated MMA is currently the best tool for detecting vitamin B12 deficiency, and is considered to be superior to testing for serum B12 directly.
