The iron age in China stands out as unique among many other contemporary societies due to the timeline that it occurred in. I believe that historical martial arts should reference texts, but those texts do not necessarily need to be fencing treatises or manuals. Additionally, I am not completely convinced by Shad's Historical Experimentation Swordsmanship Theory, and I question the assertion that biomechanical principles inevitably lead to similar martial practices. Essentialist, climatic, economic, political, and ethnological interpretations are explored in an attempt to unpack this massive question and provide an introduction to this fascinating historical question. Ming Shield Manual: Raise Hand Stance 紀效八勢：起手勢 The Scholar-General 墨將點兵 2021-05-14 | In this video I continue my journey of interpreting General Qi Jiguang's rattan shield manual by focusing on the first stance presented: the raised hand stance (起手勢). In my view, this stance is primarily about footwork. It it is certainly the only stepping method that Qi Jiguang advocates for in the Jixiao Xinshu, but I believe that it describes a way to move quickly when the need arises.
