I made the decision to shelter inside the truck stop as the storm approached. Several QLCS circulations were present along the leading edge, including a confirmed tornado in Castlewood to the south of Watertown.
The mobile mesonet sampled a peak wind gust of 81 mph with a one-minute average wind speed of 60 mph as the leading edge of the derecho overtook the vehicle.

The data displayed on-screen is recorded in real-time using a custom-built mobile mesonet system. The mobile mesonet is mounted to the roof of the truck and records high resolution, scientific-grade surface measurements every 1-second for wind speed, wind direction, atmospheric pressure, air temperature, relative humidity, dew point temperature and solar radiation.
The following values are updated every 1-minute on-screen: WIND, GUST, PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE, HUMIDITY and DEW POINT. All these measurements (other than GUST) are a 1-minute average derived from sixty 1-second measurements. The GUST value is NOT an average and represents a peak 1-second wind gust sampled during the 1-minute timeframe.

On October 9/2018, I set out with a few collogues to deploy several scientific-grade weather stations along the Florida coastline to record one-second wind and pressure data as the storm made landfall. Later that day, I coordinated with Mark Sudduth w/HurricaneTrack to finish deploying his remote cameras and a couple weather stations before returning to the hotel for the night.
The hurricane made landfall on October 10/2018. I remained at the hotel to film the storm while Mark and Brent drove to Mexico Beach to deploy a camera system last minute. You can watch what that camera captured at the links below.
During the storms peak intensity, we all stayed at the hotel for safety reasons instead of venturing out to deploy a special weather balloon payload in the eye. After the storm, Mark and Brent made their way back to Mexico Beach to retrieve the camera system.
My mobile mesonet truck seen in the video measured a peak wind speed of 94 mph with a minimum pressure of 940 hPa.

Clip two was cut short as I had to get inside before the gas station staff closed and secured the doors. The man speaking in the last clip is one of several truck stop customers taking shelter from the storm. It's not me.
Our mobile mesonet truck (seen during clip two under the hotel sign) sampled a peak wind gust of 81 mph with a one-minute average wind speed of 60 mph as the leading edge of the derecho overtook the vehicle.

When I made it to Watertown, I scoped out a couple areas where I could safely ride out the storm. I eventually settled on Stone’s Truck Stop along Highway 212 at the Interstate 29 interchange. This area was fairly open to the south allowing the mobile mesonet to obtain accurate wind measurements.
I made the decision to shelter inside the truck stop as the storm approached. Several QLCS circulations were present along the leading edge, including a confirmed tornado in Castlewood to the south of Watertown.
The mobile mesonet sampled a peak wind gust of 81 mph with a one-minute average wind speed of 60 mph as the leading edge of the derecho overtook the vehicle.

I Eventually made my way north into Aberdeen where two QLCS circulations formed on the west side of town prompting a Tornado Warning. I only observed a couple funnels to my west as I made my way into Aberdeen; no tornado was observed.

A couple years later this siren quit working. I was told by City maintenance that they opted to power off this siren indefinitely and to reinstall their 2001-130.
My last project for Valley Springs was coordinating the reinstallation of their 2001 with West Shore Services in 2015. This project raised the siren from a 30 foot rotted/skinny pole to a new 50 foot Class II pole. This helped to ensure the City was adequately covered by a battery backup siren.
