This excerpt is dedicated to Badi's family - a famous musical family from Brazil. Jorge Assad, Dona Ica Assad and their children Badi, Clarice, Sérgio, and Odair Assad are all musicians and singers. Since 2012, the Assad family has been involved in an annual music event, the Assad Festival (originally called the "Assad Week"). The festival in São João da Boa Vista, which brings Família Assad and other musicians together, has become an established part of the region's tradition.

Badi Assad makes exciting music in the genres of classical, jazz, and worldbeat. Coming from a musical family (her father Jorge and her brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad are also successful musicians), she studied classical guitar at the Rio de Janeiro University. After winning the city's Young Instrumentalists Contest (1984) and the award for Best Brazilian Guitarist at the Heitor Villa-Lobos Festival (1987), Assad gained wide acclaim as an artist. In 1995, the readers of Guitar Player magazine voted her album "Rhythms" Best Classical Album of the Year, while the Guitar Player editors voted her Best Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitarist.

Assad has established herself as a strong voice in the music scene - from the classical to the pop world. Along the way, she has had to struggle with many pressures, such as the challenging heritage of coming from a family of musicians, the opinions of critics, and the adversities of a male-dominated music world. This documentary portrait by São Paulo filmmaker Edu Felistoque takes us into the world of Assad's creative work, her unique talent, thoughts, and feelings, and gives an insight into her life and journey.

"Badi" was screened at the Festival du Cinéma de Paris and received the "Best Film" award at FestCine Maracanaú (Fortaleza) as well as the "Best Documentary" award at LABAFF (Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival).

"Voices of Our Time" gives music lovers everywhere front-row seats in the famous Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris for recitals by some of the world’s finest singers. And, to add to the enjoyment of the performances, the programs are intercut with informal interviews with the artists, who introduce their choice of music.

"Erlkönig" is a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It depicts the death of a child assailed by a supernatural being, the Erlking, a king of the fairies. It was originally written by Goethe as part of a 1782 Singspiel, Die Fischerin.

About "Leonard Bernstein: Reflections"

Filmed in 1977, the documentary had to wait thirty-one years before being released in his native country. It shows the iconic American conductor rehearsing and performing at a Bernstein retrospective in Tel Aviv - equally amazingly, the very first retrospective given to his music.

In Leonard Bernstein: Reflections, he discusses his Boston childhood, his musical growth at Harvard and the Curtis Institute, and the influence of great masters like Reiner, Mitropoulos, and Koussevitzky. He shares his feelings on the primacy of tonal music and speculates on the nature of the creative process.

From Carnegie Hall, the scene of his debut, to the living room of his home and his private studio overlooking New York's Central Park, Reflections explores the artist's varied and colorful career. Bernstein's eloquence and charm have marked his television appearances from the pioneering Omnibus programs of the 1950s, and the CBS Young People's Concerts, to the provocative Norton lectures delivered at Harvard in the 1970s, and are powerfully evident in this documentary.

Bernstein's genius was, notoriously, protean in its scope. Conductor, pianist, composer, teacher, author, media celebrity: he excelled in all fields, much to the chagrin of his detractors, who felt that he should focus on one thing only and do it right. Yet all his many activities interlocked and cross-fertilized each other: to remove any one of them would have impoverished the rest. Their common denominator is encapsulated in the film's opening sentence by his words "the urge to communicate - with as many people as possible." It's an axiom under which the manifold activities of this almost maniacally dynamic musician fall neatly into place.

Michael Nyman: The Composers Beginnings in Music & Search for Polish Ancestors | Documentary Clip

wocomoMUSIC 2023-11-04 | Excerpt from the documentary "Michael Nyman in Progress" (2010) on the English composer, musicologist, librettist and filmmaker. With subtitles in Polish and German.

Nyman gained fame due to his scores for the films of Jane Campion ("The Piano"), Peter Greenaway ("The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover") or his soundtrack album for Michael Winterbottom's "Wonderland". Nyman is also the composer of many operas, such as "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" or "Letters, Riddles and Writs". In this touching clip from the documentary, the composer elaborates on his childhood beginnings with music and goes on a journey to discover the history of his Polish and Jewish ancestry.

This documentary accompanies the concert film "Michael Nyman Band: Live at Studio Halle", in which Nyman and his band perform a number of famous soundtrack pieces.

Badi Assad: Documentary on the Brazilian Guitarist, Composer & Singer

wocomoMUSIC 2023-10-14 | Edu Felistoque's music documentary "Badi" looks at the personal journey and career of acclaimed singer, guitarist, and composer Badi Assad ("Verde", "Wonderland").
The Brazilian artist makes exciting music in the genres of classical, jazz, and worldbeat. Coming from a musical family (her father Jorge and her brothers Sérgio and Odair Assad are also successful musicians), Assad studied classical guitar at the Rio de Janeiro University. After winning the city's Young Instrumentalists Contest (1984) and the award for Best Brazilian Guitarist at the Heitor Villa-Lobos Festival (1987), Assad gained wide acclaim as an artist. In 1995, the readers of Guitar Player magazine voted her album "Rhythms" Best Classical Album of the Year, while the Guitar Player editors voted her Best Acoustic Fingerstyle Guitarist.

Brazilian composer Badi Assad has established herself as a strong voice in the music scene - from the classical to the pop world. Along the way, she has had to struggle with many pressures, such as the challenging heritage of coming from a family of musicians, the opinions of critics, and the adversities of a male-dominated music world. This documentary portrait by São Paulo filmmaker Edu Felistoque takes us into the world of Assad's creative work, her unique talent, thoughts, and feelings, and gives an insight into her life and journey.

"Badi" was screened at the Festival du Cinéma de Paris and received the "Best Film" award at FestCine Maracanaú (Fortaleza) as well as the "Best Documentary" award at LABAFF (Los Angeles Brazilian Film Festival).

wocomoMUSIC 2023-08-12 | The Gavin Bryars Ensemble performs Bryars's fascinating piece "A Man in a Room, Gambling". The meditative music is based on the idea of a radio show in which the presenter explains a complicated card trick.
British composer and double bassist Gavin Bryars (born in 1943, in Yorkshire) is well-known for his work in jazz, as well as his famous piece "The Sinking of the Titanic" (1969-1972), which is considered an experimental music classic.
Bryars is the most provocative and original member of an unusually gifted generation of composers. He started his career from an experimental position rare in British music, worked with John Cage and has continued to chart a radical course while attracting an international following. In 1979 he formed the Gavin Bryars Ensemble. This is an excerpt from the documentary "Gavin Bryars: Sounds for the Sinking of the Titanic".

The documentary "Sounds for the Sinking of the Titanic" about Gavin Bryars takes its title from one of his early works. Long before Titanic fever, Bryars was fascinated by the sinking of the luxury liner. The notion that the ship’s orchestra continued to play as the vessel sank captured his imagination and he scored his sounds for "The Sinking of the Titanic" indeterminately to convey the notion of the music still echoing underwater to this day.
The program travels to Whitby, an English harbor town on the rugged coast of Yorkshire, to meet Gavin Bryars, explore his ideas and sources of inspiration and sample his music. His musical activities over the years have been astonishingly varied. A jazz bassist and improviser who studied philosophy at university and composition privately, he worked for a short while with John Cage, founded the Portsmouth Sinfonia - which performed and recorded classical repertoire with minimal musical skills! - has composed prolifically for the theatre, dance and film, collaborated with visual artists, formed his own ensemble to play contemporary chamber music, and written for both the concert hall and operatic stage.

At the Sydney Opera House, on October 2nd 1990, Dame Joan Sutherland bade farewell to opera. As she gave her last performance, as Marguerite de Valois in The Australian Opera production of Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots, she could look back on a professional singing career spanning 42 years, in all the great opera houses of the world. This film presents a retrospective of those years.

When she started out in England in 1951, she had a God-given voice, broad Australian accent and a large, ungainly body. With the help of her husband, the director and conductor Richard Bonynge, she learnt how to use her voice to best advantage. Coached by Norman Ayrton and Franco Zeffirelli, she overcame her physical awkwardness and diffidence to become a superb dramatic actress, capable of both moving audiences to tears and rolling them in the aisles. Her professional success was staggering; in the history of opera she will be placed alongside the very greatest singers of the past - Lind, Patti, Melba - her fellow countrywomen - and Maria Callas.

It was at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden that she achieved international stardom, in her performance as Lucia di Lammermoor in 1959. She returned there on New Year's Eve 1991, along with her friends and colleagues of many years, Luciano Pavarotti and Marilyn Horne, to make a guest appearance in the Party Scene in Die Fledermaus.
Encompassing her final performances in Les Huguenots and Die Fledermaus, interviews, a nostalgic visit to The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, newsreel footage, and a wealth of performance extracts in which she is seen in some of her greatest roles - Lucia di Lammermoor, La Fille du régiment, Lucrezia Borgia and Lakmé. Contributions from close friends and colleagues, including Luciano Pavarotti, Marilyn Horne, critic Bernard Levin, Norman Ayrton, Franco Zeffirelli, and her biographer Norma Major, add to a celebration of Dame Joan's remarkable talent.

Grace Bumbry was born in St. Louis, Missouri, studied at Boston University, and rose to stardom with her roles in "Don Carlo", "Il Trovatore", "Tannhäuser", "Salome", "Macbeth", "Porgy and Bess" and especially as "Carmen". Bumbry performed at Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera and La Scala, under the baton of conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and Georg Solti, and was the first Black singer to gain fame at Bayreuth. She was proclaimed commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1996 and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2009.

This episode of the series "Voices Of Our Time: A Recital Series from the Théâtre du Châtelet" features American soprano/mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry, accompanied by pianist Helmut Deutsch. Their live performance at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris is intercut with backstage interviews in which Bumbry and Deutsch introduce their choice of music. This is the first of ten parts of the episode.
Grace Bumbry is universally acclaimed as one of the great musicians of our time. Her vocal versatility and dramatic instincts have made her an unparalleled singing actress, not only in opera, but in recital as well. Bumbry’s talent was spotted by the legendary Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976), one of opera's most-loved sopranos, famed for the radiance and warmth of her full-bodied voice.
Bumbry’s program for this recital is therefore a homage to Lotte Lehmann. It includes pieces she worked on with her, particular favorites of her mentor, and ones by the composers Lehmann loved best – Schumann, Schubert, Liszt and Berlioz. Talking in interview sequences interspersed through the recital, Grace Bumbry draws on her memories of Lotte Lehmann, from whom she learned the art of being a recitalist.

Erstaunlich und erhellend zugleich: Regisseur Jan-Schmidt-Garre hat einen Film geschaffen, der die beachtliche Länge von hundert Minuten überschreitet und sich auf ein einziges Thema beschränkt: die geduldige Beobachtung des Dirigenten Sergiu Celibidache bei der Entstehung, bei der Arbeit an seiner Musik.
"Man macht nichts, man lässt es einfach entstehen", der Untertitel des Films ist ein Zitat des Musikphilosophen Celibidache. Schmidt-Garre begleitete und beobachtete den Maestro über Jahre hinweg bei seinen Proben mit den Münchner Philharmonikern und mit der Orchesterakademie Schleswig-Holstein. Es gelang ihm, die Intensität, die Konzentration, aber auch die menschliche Anteilnahme einzufangen, mit der Celibidache seine Orchester- und Chorproben leitete. Und mit der der Dirigent, getreu seiner Maxime, dass Lehren der wichtigste menschliche Akt ist, seine Studenten über Musik und ihre Regeln lehrt. Ob an der Universität Mainz oder in einer Mühle in Frankreich während seiner Ferien (wohin er ein ganzes Kammerorchester aus Italien mitgenommen hatte) - Celibidache lehrt mit Weisheit, Humor und unendlicher Kompetenz. Wurde die Technik des Dirigierens jemals so menschlich erklärt? Oder der Unterschied zwischen Spannung und Intensität?

Schmidt-Garre beherrscht die Kunst des Beobachtens, ohne sich aufzudrängen, ebenso wie die Kunst des differenzierten Kommentars, und macht damit den Weg frei für charmante Episoden, wie "Celis" Begegnungen mit alten Freunden auf seinen Reisen nach Rumänien und Israel. Es war mehr als offensichtlich: Celibidache wird nicht nur sehr bewundert, sondern auch von vielen geliebt.

Aaron Copland is best known for the hugely popular compositions he wrote 1936-49, such as "Appalachian Spring", "Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo". He is also a highly respected film composer ("Of Mice and Men" (1939), "The Red Pony" (1949)). Mostly, however, Copland was one of the first to capture the essence of American life in sound. Together with Gershwin, Ives, and Bernstein, he created music that mirrored the world in which he lived. This documentary looks at how a sassy New Yorker of Russian-Jewish background came to write infectious and accessible music that established a distinctive American idiom. At the same time, it explains the context of his work and dives into his life, including the McCarthy era of the 1950s, when the composer found himself on Hollywood's notorious black list.

Extracts from an interview with Copland are included and his biographer, Howard Pollack, and American conductor Hugh Wolff, a leading exponent of his music, both contribute to the program. Wolff also conducts the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra in passages from some of the composer’s most famous works, including "Fanfare for the Common Man", "Symphony No. 3", "Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson" (with mezzo-soprano Stella Doufexis), "El salón Mexico" and music for the feature film "Our Town".

Grace Bumbry was born in St. Louis, Missouri, studied at Boston University, and rose to stardom with her roles in "Don Carlo", "Il Trovatore", "Tannhäuser", "Salome", "Macbeth", "Porgy and Bess" and especially as "Carmen". Bumbry performed at Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera and La Scala, under the baton of conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and Georg Solti, and was the first Black singer to gain fame at Bayreuth. She was proclaimed commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1996 and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2009.

This episode of the series "Voices Of Our Time: A Recital Series from the Théâtre du Châtelet" features American soprano/mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry, accompanied by pianist Helmut Deutsch. Their live performance at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris is intercut with backstage interviews in which Bumbry and Deutsch introduce their choice of music. This is the first of ten parts of the episode.
Grace Bumbry is universally acclaimed as one of the great musicians of our time. Her vocal versatility and dramatic instincts have made her an unparalleled singing actress, not only in opera, but in recital as well. Bumbry’s talent was spotted by the legendary Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976), one of opera's most-loved sopranos, famed for the radiance and warmth of her full-bodied voice.
Bumbry’s program for this recital is therefore a homage to Lotte Lehmann. It includes pieces she worked on with her, particular favorites of her mentor, and ones by the composers Lehmann loved best – Schumann, Schubert, Liszt and Berlioz. Talking in interview sequences interspersed through the recital, Grace Bumbry draws on her memories of Lotte Lehmann, from whom she learned the art of being a recitalist.
