The meditative music is based on the idea of a radio show in which the presenter explains a complicated card trick.British composer and double bassist Gavin Bryars (born in 1943, in Yorkshire) is well-known for his work in jazz, as well as his famous piece "The Sinking of the Titanic" (1969-1972), which is considered an experimental music classic. Bryars is the most provocative and original member of an unusually gifted generation of composers. He started his career from an experimental position rare in British music, worked with John Cage and has continued to chart a radical course while attracting an international following. In 1979 he formed the Gavin Bryars Ensemble. Long before Titanic fever, Bryars was fascinated by the sinking of the luxury liner. The notion that the ship’s orchestra continued to play as the vessel sank captured his imagination and he scored his sounds for "The Sinking of the Titanic" indeterminately to convey the notion of the music still echoing underwater to this day. The program travels to Whitby, an English harbor town on the rugged coast of Yorkshire, to meet Gavin Bryars, explore his ideas and sources of inspiration and sample his music. His musical activities over the years have been astonishingly varied. As she gave her last performance, as Marguerite de Valois in The Australian Opera production of Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots, she could look back on a professional singing career spanning 42 years, in all the great opera houses of the world. This film presents a retrospective of those years. When she started out in England in 1951, she had a God-given voice, broad Australian accent and a large, ungainly body. With the help of her husband, the director and conductor Richard Bonynge, she learnt how to use her voice to best advantage. Coached by Norman Ayrton and Franco Zeffirelli, she overcame her physical awkwardness and diffidence to become a superb dramatic actress, capable of both moving audiences to tears and rolling them in the aisles. Her professional success was staggering; in the history of opera she will be placed alongside the very greatest singers of the past - Lind, Patti, Melba - her fellow countrywomen - and Maria Callas.It was at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden that she achieved international stardom, in her performance as Lucia di Lammermoor in 1959. She returned there on New Year's Eve 1991, along with her friends and colleagues of many years, Luciano Pavarotti and Marilyn Horne, to make a guest appearance in the Party Scene in Die Fledermaus. Encompassing her final performances in Les Huguenots and Die Fledermaus, interviews, a nostalgic visit to The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, newsreel footage, and a wealth of performance extracts in which she is seen in some of her greatest roles - Lucia di Lammermoor, La Fille du régiment, Lucrezia Borgia and Lakmé. Bumbry performed at Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera and La Scala, under the baton of conductors such as Herbert von Karajan and Georg Solti, and was the first Black singer to gain fame at Bayreuth. She was proclaimed commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1996 and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2009.This episode of the series "Voices Of Our Time: A Recital Series from the Théâtre du Châtelet" features American soprano/mezzo-soprano Grace Bumbry, accompanied by pianist Helmut Deutsch. Their live performance at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris is intercut with backstage interviews in which Bumbry and Deutsch introduce their choice of music. This is the first of ten parts of the episode.Grace Bumbry is universally acclaimed as one of the great musicians of our time. Her vocal versatility and dramatic instincts have made her an unparalleled singing actress, not only in opera, but in recital as well. Bumbry’s talent was spotted by the legendary Lotte Lehmann (1888-1976), one of opera's most-loved sopranos, famed for the radiance and warmth of her full-bodied voice.Bumbry’s program for this recital is therefore a homage to Lotte Lehmann. It includes pieces she worked on with her, particular favorites of her mentor, and ones by the composers Lehmann loved best – Schumann, Schubert, Liszt and Berlioz.
