We get this set of questions all of the time, it usually goes down like this, so I have to bust out this video to get guys to HEAR what I mean.
Customer: "My bike runs good 60 ft's and 1/8 mile ET's and MPH... but it won't MPH in the 1/4" = My Reply: "you are spinning up top"
Customer Reply: ... "I can't be spinning -- I have a stock wheelbase bike" = My Reply: "you are spinning up top"
Customer Reply: ... "I can't be spinning -- I have a stock engine" = My Reply: "you are spinning up top"
Customer Reply: ... "I can't be spinning -- I don't have Nitrous" = My Reply: "you are spinning up top"
So, the point is; you don't have to spin THIS MUCH to slow down! Even if you only spin a little, it can cost you MPH and the rider as NO IDEA that it's even happening. Even with a data logger, it's hard to detect.
Here are ways to troubleshoot and hopefully solve it, in order of preference:
1. Lower your rear tire pressure. But remember, lower pressure is like having a flat tire and resistance increases as pressure decreases. Run as much pressure as you can for a proper launch (given your available traction) and without hampering your MPH.
2. Change to a brand of tire which will give you more traction, hopefully without having to decrease you pressure to the point of being counter-productive to your goal of maximizing you peak MPH.
3. Increase your spring preload and/or the compression dampening of your shock. Remember, a softer setting helps produce more traction off of the line on a slippery track, but it works in reverse after you get moving. Additional compression dampening presses the tire down harder on the racing surface.
4. Replace the rear shock with a unit which allows for #3. We have seen amazing increases on high horsepower bikes by switching to our Brock's Performance Dragshock by Öhlins in apples to apples testing at the drag strip.
