With hydrogen-electric technology closing in on certification for commercial configurations, industry players consider where they need to invest and focus. For airlines, the opportunities for reduced operating costs and emissions are strong incentives, particularly with some countries legislating against regional aviation, but implementing new technologies across their fleet and ground operations presents challenges.
For airports, the ability to attract more point-to-point passengers and reduced noise from electric aircraft is considered, alongside the required infrastructure expenditure and operational changes.
How exactly can hydrogen refueling be rolled out in an airport setting, and how do airports keep up with demand and scale as hydrogen-electric aircraft begin to soar? Where are the risks and barriers to implementation, and who will need to regulate new infrastructure? How can it be financed, and how do the business models differ from existing fuels? This session will invite a detailed discussion of the practicalities necessary to delivering refueling infrastructure and invite a debate about the best path forward for a common approach.

For the aviation industry, the focus has been on the pressing need to decarbonise. The benefits that low-carbon hydrogen can deliver as a propulsion technology given the breakthroughs in flight demonstrations. However, the potential of hydrogen to decarbonise more than just flight in an airport setting, has yet to be fully considered. From ground transport, cargo and warehouse settings, backup and stationary power - the future of hydrogen at airports can be dramatic and far-reaching.
This session will examine the full range of applications that hydrogen can bring to the aviation industry. In addition, hydrogen’s role in the full ecosystem of air travel will be examined.
