edit: After spending more time with this level I'd say it doesn't matter much what path I take, since there are basically infinite routes around this city where I can keep taking in plenty of food. Although it would be harder to make sure I'm taking in gold bars and blue stars all the time too. The two bases hand out 200 and 400 blue stars at a time, and I think it's probably well worth claiming those as I play.
In this stage different objects cause significantly different amounts of growth, unlike earlier levels where all the objects are worth almost the same amount. I think the differences will become less pronounced as I gain more per food due to stronger pets and wands.
