Level 5 is a good place to rack up a lot of blue stars. (I don't know if it's the best or not. 6 is probably better.) In this video I ran a route aiming for blue star pickups.
I had to redo this video when I noticed how many star pickups are available around the hill with the mayor boss. :)
If you need less food per slime than in this video, it might work well to divide the stage into two alternating routes, and get half the blue stars with one slime then the other half with the next.
In my opinion stage 5 has a decent amount of food to eat almost everywhere on the whole map, so almost any route will work pretty well, but I don't think any path will award as much food as in level 4 or 6. In this video I made fairly poor use of the pet exp power-up I had.
If you use a path like this and you haven't toppled the mayor boss yet, be careful not to run into it. That is unless you want to give it a try ... I won against the mayor boss with the 500 million slime.
