Sam Houston National Forest, Montgomery (2026)
Most people picture cactus and wide open plains when they think of Texas, but head about fifty miles north of Houston and you'll find something completely different: 163,000 acres of piney woods called Sam Houston National Forest.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt made it official back in 1936, and the Civilian Conservation Corps planted millions of trees to help bring it back after decades of heavy logging. Today it's home to the Lone Star Hiking Trail, which winds 96 miles through pine and hardwood forest, creeks, and the occasional bayou, making it the longest hiking trail in the state.
Whether you want a short family walk or an overnight backpacking trip, this forest between Huntsville and Conroe has room for it. It's proof that Texas has more than one kind of wild, and this one happens to be green.
