This is an interesting lawsuit. YouTube is being sued because their Premium feature does not block ads. Well, we did see YouTube offering Premium Lite, which still sees ads on some music videos and shorts. So, I guess they want the music labels to have them. They got sued anyway because they're Americans. Of course, they'll get sued.
The thing is while I do agree that the Premium Lite offer is stupid, this lawsuit is suing YouTube for something that wasn't really their fault, or at least not entirely their fault. The lawsuit is suing YouTube for sponsor segments being put on videos. Wait, what? That's not YouTube's fault. That's the YouTubers that put the sponsors there.
Not only that, but if you have YouTube Premium like me, you can totally skip the sponsor segments by just tapping a couple times on your screen when you see them and then pick "Jump Ahead." If you're on a browser using ad blockers, you can bypass the sponsor segments too using extensions or third-party apps. The point is Premium can totally skip them with a couple taps. I guess you can make the criticism that they should be skipped automatically, but I really don't think that's worth of a lawsuit. But then again, a lot of lawsuits are not worth the lawsuits.
// How do you expect us creators to make a living and continue to make videos for you to watch?
Uh, that's not the viewers' problem. How you earn money from making YouTube videos is entirely on you. YouTube is a highly competitive place, and viewers don't stick to one creator. They stick to several, and if they find out that the content you're making is boring, they're just going to move on to another creator. They're not going to wait until you earn money to produce videos. They'll just find someone else who can do it better than you.
That being said, sponsored segments on videos is partially on YouTube to blame. They're not supporting their creators so that they're able to earn enough from ad-sense. They need to get their own sponsors too. That's why you see them shill shady products, but I don't blame them for doing that. They got to survive. I blame YouTube for fostering that environment, but hey. At least you can skip them with Premium. That's really good for the creators and the sponsors, right?
