This is the absolutely simplest version of the technique. Its a great way to get familiar with the essence it, and its also very handy because you can do it with absolutely no knowledge of zodiac subdivisions or even the exact degrees in your chart.
The tradeoff is a sacrifice in accuracy, that might be more or less noticeable depending on the particular chart. But it is definitely worth it to get started here, and the result is usually quite good and in the right ballpark at the very least.
Here is Marilyn Monroe’s main chart.
STEP ONE: just note the sign that each planet occupies.
STEP TWO: Give a point to each occupied sign
STEP THREE: Tally the points per sign.
This shows us Marilyn as a “Gemini/Aquarius” hybrid - which is really quite a useful start to understanding her: Gemini showing her expressiveness, wit, and intellect, and Aquarius showing some Saturnian self-imagery behind the scenes, and depicting her accurately as an empathetic person.
Weighting
We can go one step further, even in this most basic version of the technique. Not every planet is equally impactful in signs, so lets weight the points to reflect that.
