"You Were on My Mind", by a 1960's San Francisco, California folk rock quintet We Five in 1965, reached #1 on the Cashbox chart, #3 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Billboard ranked the record as the #4 song of 1965. It is an up-tempo version with several changes to the original composition written and recorded by the duo Ian and Sylvia in 1964. The We Five cover sold over one million copies, and was awarded a gold record. The ensamble is noted for harmonic vocals, a melding of acoustic and electric guitars, folk music, rock and a bit of jazz. They marked the beginning of a musical transition by adding drums and an electric 12 string guitar to a traditional acoustic folk song.We Five were also the first commercial folk-rock artists to record music for Coca-Cola. In 1966, We Five turned down to opportunity to record the first version of "Daydream Believer", which went on to be an international hit for The Monkees.
