"Hold the Line", written by David Paich of the rock group Toto, was the band's first hit single reaching the #5 spot on the US Billboard Charts in 1978. Followed by hit singles "Rosanna" and "Africa", Toto enjoyed great commercial success in the late 1970's and 1980's and became one of the best-selling music groups of their era. The band developed a musical style that combined elements of pop, rock, soul, funk, progressive rock, hard rock, R&B and jazz. The word Toto in Latin translates to "all-encompassing", and since the band members had previously sessioned on many other different records and musical genres, they adopted the name as their own. Toto was one of the few U.S. bands to make music videos in the years prior to MTV, and in the 1980's, they became one of the most popular artists in MTV media. The Grammy and International award winning Toto is one of the few 70's bands that have endured the changing trends and styles.
