The little metal strainer filter inside a chainsaw carburetor is absolutely critical because it protects the metering chamber and jets from even the tiniest bits of dirt, varnish, or rubber fragments that slip past the main in-tank fuel filter. Over time, that screen can clog with fine debris or sticky residue from old fuel. When it gets blocked, fuel can’t flow properly into the metering side of the carb, which causes classic problems like hard starting, only running on choke, bogging when you rev, or stalling under load.
Cleaning it restores proper fuel flow. To do this, the carb needs to be stripped, the screen lifted out carefully, and the passages flushed with carb cleaner or compressed air. Skipping this step in a rebuild means you may leave the root cause of fuel starvation untouched.
In short: that little strainer is the carb’s “last line of defense.” If it clogs, the engine starves — even if the rest of the carb looks spotless.
