I went to the Colorado Springs Labor Day Lift Off balloon festival this weekend to see lots of neat hot air balloon! =) Hot air balloons remind me of Mario video games, so I decided to play the "Athletic Theme" from Super Mario World 2 - Yoshi's Island, composed by Koji Kondo. It's kind of a difficult song, especially at the original tempo, so I slowed it down a bit... :o
A lot of people ask me for the sheet music of the arrangements I make. If the song is still under copyright, distributing sheet music requires a "print license," which is different than the license needed to distribute music through a video. Print licenses are really difficult to obtain because they need to be negotiated with the copyright holder using lawyers and such, but if I put the notes in a video, technically it's considered a video instead of sheet music. I'll submit the video to Nintendo, and if they approve it (YAY! It looks like they did approve it! :D), then I suppose I can share the notes of my Nintendo song arrangements through videos! :D I think it's a bit of a grey area, but at least Nintendo knows about it and is earning royalties from it...
Even with the song notated, I still improvise a little bit. I tried to write out as much of the syncopated parts as I could, but I really was just having fun and making stuff up when I recorded the audio...lol! The 16th notes are swung in the original version, but I think they can also be played straight. I mixed between swinging them and not swinging them, which is probably going to get some criticism lol...oh well. ^_^ I think the little riff between repeating the song is easier to play when swung, but swinging the other 16th note runs seems to make them a lot more difficult to play than they need to be....
This song is very jazz-like -- but I think jazz is hard to play... :o I want to learn how to play more jazz music! :D I wonder if you can mix Celtic music and Jazz??? That might be something fun to experiment with someday -- jazz jigs and reels. :o
This video was a bit of a detour from my normal fiddle music, but it was lots of fun to make! Lots of people have been asking me to make more game music covers, so I hope you still like it! ^_^ More Celtic tunes are coming up soon! =)
Yoshi is by far my favorite Mario character! He's so cute and awesome! ^_^

Camera:
This was mostly recorded with the "Sony RX100 V" point-and-shoot camera. I'm really starting to like this camera for being so small and easy to use, yet having excellent low-light performance and image quality. Even though it's an expensive camera, I think it deters theft since it doesn't have the look of pricey DSLR camera. The introduction timelapse was filmed with the Canon 70D.
