When does Yom Kippur actually begin? Leviticus 23 holds the key and the Hebrew confirms it. In this clip, we break down the original Hebrew words to show that Yom Ha’Kippurim begins on the 10th day of the chodesh (renewed moon), from evening to evening, starting at the close of the 9th.
Hebrew:
אַךְ בֶּעָשׂוֹר לַחֹדֶשׁ הַשְּׁבִיעִי הַזֶּה יוֹם הַכִּפֻּרִים הוּא
Transliteration:
Ach be‘asor la’chodesh hashvi‘i hazeh Yom HaKippurim hu
Translation:
“On the tenth day of this seventh chodesh is the Day of Atonement.”
Chodesh (new moon) is used interchangeably with yereach (moon), but the timing is confirmed when the first visible sliver of light appears. This is the Torah calendar, not tradition.
