Yellow Pyramid Ants (Dorymyrmex flavus) enter and exit an oddly shaped nest at Attwater Prairie Chicken National Wildlife Refuge, in Colorado County, TX, USA.
Usually, the debris pile around their nest openings are more circular. This one is almost triangular.
It looks like there are several Fire Ant (Solenopsis invicta) carcasses around the edge of the nest entrance. I wonder if a fight with Fire Ants caused the odd shape of the nest opening?
