Yasaka Shrine (Yasaka Jinja) is one of Japan's oldest and was established in 656 A.D. It serves as the host of Kyoto's annual Gion Festival. In fact the Gion district came about because of the shrine and today it is famous as the place to see geisha (geiko). It is also next to Maruyama Park, a popular cherry blossom spot.
