Kiyosumi Garden is one of the best gardens in Tokyo. Sadly, few tourists ever go to see it. Discover what they are all missing here.
Kiyosumi Garden (清澄庭園) has a long history going back to Japan's feudal era. A feudal lord owned the land and built a mansion and garden on the area, and later the founder of Mitsubishi, Yataro Iwasaki, purchased the property and expanded the garden. Most of the villa was burned down in the great earthquake and fire in 1923, and the Iwasaki family then donated the land to the city of Toyko. After several years of repairs, Kiyosumi Garden was opened to the public in 1932.
There are many stroll gardens with a pond in Tokyo, but Kiyosumi Garden (a.k.a. Kiyosumi Teien) is one of the best, with an area just over 37,000 square meters.
Open daily 9 AM - 5 PM (last entry 4:30 PM). Admission is just ¥150.
Closed Dec 29th-Jan 1st. It's located just a 3-minute walk south of the Kiyosumi-Shirakawa subway station.
