Why Visit Yala National Park?
Simply because it is one of the oldest and richest national parks in Sri Lanka, where you can still find wild elephants in the wild.
Moreover, you can spot 215 species of birds and 44 species of mammals here.
I myself saw dozens of water buffaloes, spotted deer, sambar deer, mongoose, rabbit, crocodile, kingfisher, white kingfisher, langur, wild boar, jackals, wild cat, peacocks, and wild peafowl (the national bird of Sri Lanka) among other animals and birds.
It is said that Yala National Park has the highest density of leopards in the world. Unfortunately, the shy cats were too shy to give us DARSHAN despite our drive-cum-guide Sudarshan trying his best to make us see them.
Lastly, our super Guide, Theeksana, told us that the park is very rich in different ecosystems. Apparently, there are 8 types of ecosystems - moist monsoon forests, dry monsoon forests, semi-deciduous forests, thorn forests, grasslands, marshes, marine wetlands, and sandy beaches.
