What's up Geekly Goods fam! 🔥 Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is directly addressing the optics of Marvel cancelling two of its highest-profile Black-led projects, Wonder Man and Mahershala Ali's long-stalled Blade movie, both shelved within weeks of each other.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Abdul-Mateen II said, "I think the optics are obvious. If I'm a big business, if I'm Disney, if I'm Marvel, I don't want to be attached to these optics. So it should be a priority to change that narrative, and to do what it takes to responsibly change that narrative, with quality stories, with quality resources." He went on to defend Wonder Man specifically, saying the show had quality storytelling, quality resources, and quality performances that both critics and audiences responded to positively, arguing it genuinely deserves a real explanation for why it didn't continue. He also revealed Marvel told him the cancellation came down to viewership numbers, though he was never given the actual figures.
Honestly, I agree with everything he's saying here. I really wish they hadn't cancelled the Blade film either. It genuinely seems like such an easy win to make happen, especially with Mahershala Ali already fully committed and ready to go.
