Check out some highlights of E-Day’s built from scratch gameplay.
Gears of War: E-Day is a brand new game, built from scratch to feel like Gears but play like new. Every animation, asset, and feature has been crafted from the ground up and our gameplay sandbox is now unified across our modes.
Gears of War defined the third-person cover shooter and we’ve refined the formula, focusing on the core Gears pillars: movement, cover, weapons and enemies. Combined with some new mechanics that expand our gameplay sandbox, E-Day delivers that iconic Gears intensity with more fluidity and choice than we’ve ever had before.
Cover is Life Gears of War: E-Day is an upcoming third-person shooter video game developed by The Coalition and People Can Fly and published by Xbox Game Studios. It is the sixth main installment in the Gears of War series and serves as a prequel to the original Gears of War (2006). The game is scheduled to be released on October 6, 2026, for Windows and Xbox Series X/S. Set fourteen years before the events of the first game, it takes place during Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde first emerged from beneath the planet Sera and launched a devastating surprise attack against humanity. The story follows young COG veterans Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as they fight to survive the invasion in the city of Kalona alongside fellow soldiers Mags Carter and Lucas Reyes, forming Bravo Squad amid the collapse of civilization. The narrative explores the origins of Marcus and Doms brotherhood while depicting the fall of Kalona and humanitys first encounters with the Locust Horde.
The gameplay expands upon the series cover-based combat with redesigned movement mechanics, including sprint sliding, jumping, climbing, and enhanced traversal options that allow for greater mobility and verticality. Players battle a variety of Locust enemies using returning weapons such as the Lancer and Longshot alongside new additions including the Gutpuncher grenade launcher and Incinerator shotgun. The campaign supports four-player online cooperative play and two-player split-screen co-op on consoles, while multiplayer modes include 4v4 competitive matches and a new twelve-player cooperative mode titled Horde Siege. The game also introduces expanded destruction systems, dynamic environmental damage, and enhanced gore effects, all built using Unreal Engine 5. Gears of War: E-Day runs at 60 frames per second in the campaign with hardware-accelerated ray tracing enabled, while the multiplayer mode supports frame rates of up to 120 frames per second. Development began following The Coalitions transition to Unreal Engine 5, with the studio aiming to recapture the atmosphere, themes, and emotional tone of the original Gears of War, particularly the sense of brotherhood, brutality, and tragedy associated with Emergence Day.
Gameplay
The campaign is set throughout the city of Kalona during Emergence Day, humanitys first encounter with the Locust Horde. Missions range from traditional linear combat sequences to larger open districts that allow players to approach objectives from multiple directions. Optional encounters and side activities enable players to assist civilians, investigate events across the city, and explore areas beyond the main story path.[4] Combat centers on battles against the Locust Horde, including returning enemies such as Drones, Boomers, Wretches, Corpsers, and Reavers, alongside new creatures originating from the Hollows. Emergence Holes return as a dynamic gameplay mechanic, allowing Locust forces to appear throughout battles.
Our battlefields are defined by their cover layout. Whether playing in Campaign, Horde or Versus, your ability to read the combat space, moving from cover-to-cover is at the core of Gears’ gameplay.
We’ve completely rebuilt our cover systems and E-Day supports a greater variety of cover types, heights and actions than ever before.
For example, our new “low ground” cover will have you hunkering behind lower walls and debris, or even dropping to prone after the top half of your protection is ripped away by gunfire. Your Gear will lay down, back-to-wall in these situations with slower movement and a slightly more exposed profile. While these cover opportunities are not always ideal, grabbing protection on a low ledge or wall can be the difference between life and death.
Move Like a Gear
Weve added a new round-by-round active reload system on the Gnasher and Breechshot. This gives these weapons versatility and tactical depth by allowing the player to quickly load a round or two to finish off a kill without going through the full reload cycle. To balance against this new ability to hot-reload, the Gnasher has its ammo capacity reduced from the previous 8 shells down to 6.
