Award-winning voice actor Ben Starr has publicly criticized Microsoft following the recent Xbox layoffs, accusing the company of telling employees “multiple lies” before the cuts.
Starr, best known for voicing Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy XVI, said he spoke to affected employees and claimed many were repeatedly reassured their jobs were safe.
“They lied. Multiple times. To multiple people. Repeatedly.” BLOOMBERG ‼️ : Microsoft has internally admitted that launching its games Day 1 on Game Pass has been a "failed gamble" that is destroying its own revenues.
The leak revealed by Bloomberg exposes a financial hole:
➡️ Massive cannibalization: Management assumes that players prefer to pay for the subscription rather than the game at $70, sinking direct sales of Xbox's AAA titles by up to 80%.
➡️ The Call of Duty disaster: Internal analysts estimate that putting the flagship franchise into the service has cost the company about $300 million in lost revenue. IT'S HEATING UP 🤬 A producer from id Software just said out loud what many were thinking: in the current corporate climate, we'll never see another Morrowind or World of Warcraft born.
The obsession with cutting costs has a hidden and devastating price that this producer puts like this:
➡️ The death of risk: Big studios are terrified. If a project doesn't guarantee it'll be a cash-printing machine, it's simply canceled in the conceptual phase.
➡️ Innovation is penalized: Legendary games like Morrowind were born because a studio on the brink of bankruptcy decided to roll the dice on a crazy idea. Today, trying that gets you fired.
Xbox expected Game Pass to have 77 million subscribers by this year
Game Pass currently has 30 million subscribers, down 4 million subscribers from 2 years ago
➡️ Soulless formulas: Developers are being forced to create safe, cloned products focused on monetization to keep shareholders happy.
He also adds: "This happens when those in control (MBA graduates) don't play video games, have never launched a game, and, fundamentally, don't understand the industry they're running."
➡️ Internal war: Multiple executives have outright opposed this strategy, arguing that the current model devalues their blockbuster productions and only benefits the user, not the company. ANALYST | Project Helix will sell roughly two million units in its launch year, scaling to 7.3 million by 2030.
• Microsoft shipped 3.2 million Xbox Series X|S consoles last year, marking the lowest annual total on record.
• Quarterly shipments fell below 500,000 for the first time in S&P’s dataset during Q1 2026.
