German Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels established New Braunfels in 1845. Five years later, the colony had become not only a cultural and commercial center for the state's German immigrant population but also the fourth-largest city in Texas. Wurstfest pays tribute to the area's German roots and local sausage makers, growing from a single-day event with 2,000 people in its inaugural celebration in 1961 to a 10-day affair attracting upwards of 200,000 visitors every year.
