Tom King just delivered the worst Wonder Woman comic of all times. Not bad. Not disappointing. Character-killing garbage.
Diana Prince has survived plenty of terrible creative decisions, but Wonder Woman #34 manages to sink below all of them. The Matriarch casually steals John Stewart’s Green Lantern ring, the Guardians apparently can’t do anything about it, Diana’s big heroic moment turns into one of the most baffling endings imaginable, and Tom King buries the whole thing under the same exhausting decompression and overwritten narration that has dragged this run down for months.
There is no “almost worked” version of this comic. The Green Lantern ring nonsense only exists to artificially inflate the Matriarch. The fight is buried under Tom King’s usual decompression and endless narration. Diana’s big moment is not heroic, inspiring, or tragic. It is just another miserable shock beat in a run that has never understood Wonder Woman in the first place.
Fortunately, the rest of the week was a lot stronger. Escape #8 delivers brutal tension and a possible comic of the year contender. Conan the Barbarian #32 proves Jim Zub still owns this character. Corpse Knight #3 continues standing out as one of the strongest indie horror books on shelves. TMNT: Saturday Morning Adventures #38 remains pure cartoon-era fun. X-Men: Elsewhen Vol. 1 reminds longtime fans what the X-Men are supposed to feel like. Superman #39 from Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora is an absolute monster. And The Peril of the Brutal Dark #5 keeps building toward a killer pulp-action finale.
