Supergirl didn’t just underperform. It collapsed below The Marvels, missed even the worst projections, and handed James Gunn a major DCU problem.
All indications heading into Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’s debut weekend suggested the movie was in trouble. But even after weeks of falling box office projections, almost nobody expected it to open this badly. Supergirl was once tracking around $60 million, then $55 million, then $45 million just before release. Instead, it opened to only about $37 million, falling below The Marvels and even below the comic book movie laughing stock Morbius.
That creates an immediate problem for James Gunn, Peter Safran, and the future of DC Studios. Supergirl was supposed to help build momentum for the new DCU. Instead, it raises serious questions about the theatrical roadmap, especially with Clayface up next, a Batman villain movie with no Batman, and Lanterns already being mocked by plenty of comic fans before it even arrives on HBO Max. After the Warner Bros. acquisition by Skydance/Paramount, Gunn needs a major win soon if he wants to keep full confidence behind his DC Studios plan.
