In the United States, parents may soon have to prove their own citizenship to get a passport for their child. This is part of President Donald Trump's latest push to narrow birthright citizenship. Under the draft guidance, every parent or guardian would have to hand over a passport, a birth certificate or proof of their immigration status when applying for a child's passport. Right now they only need to show they are the parent and produce photo identification. They tick a box saying whether they are U.S. citizens, but file no documents. The proposed rules would carry out an order Trump signed on August 6th, aimed at what the White House calls "birth tourism." These narrower rules come after the Supreme Court struck down Trump's earlier attempt at limiting birthright citizenship.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is visiting Egypt for the first time in a decade. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi met Xi at Cairo airport on Tuesday, with soldiers, folk dancers and children waving Chinese flags along a red carpet. Egypt's Presisdent Sisi wrote that the two countries are now partners strengthening the Global South. China's President Xi called them "close brothers." Egypt held its second annual military exercise with China last month, even though it receives about 1.3 billion dollars a year in U.S. military aid. In recent years, China has invested billions into Egyptian ports, factories and solar power.
In Germany, the power grid in the eastern state of Brandenburg was sabotaged on Tuesday. Rockets carrying conductive material were fired into high-voltage lines, causing two short circuits.
The state interior minister said more than 10 devices have been found and the count is still rising, adding that the devices were specially built. He didn't rule out the chance that a foreign power was behind the attacks. He also didn't exclude left-wing activists who have attacked power sites before. Grid supply was not cut off and lines remain working.
In New York on Monday, a woman stabbed two people near Times Square. Police say she first wounded a 68-year-old tourist, who is in stable condition. About 20 seconds later she attacked again stabbing Erin Piacenti, a vice president at Bank of America. She later died in hospital.
Officers spent about four minutes trying to get the woman to drop her knives. When she moved toward them, officers used Tasers but as they were ineffective, two officers opened fire. The suspect later died in hospital.
