네팔, 발전소 6곳에 '고립 추정' 실종자 900여명 구조 총력전
Almost a week after devastating flash floods swept through Nepal, rescue teams are still searching for more than 900 workers believed to be trapped in hydropower tunnels, as the death toll climbs past 950.
Our Cho Young-eun has the latest.
A massive rescue operation is underway in Nepal, as teams search for people believed to be trapped inside hydropower tunnels in the hard-hit districts of Rasuwa and Nuwakot.
According to Nepal’s Energy Minister, authorities are trying to reach at least 933 workers believed to be trapped at hydropower projects along the Trishuli River.
The operation is being led by Chinese and Nepalese military personnel, with experts from India, Korea and Australia also taking part.
Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah said Monday that 279 people had been rescued from the sites, while broader rescue operations had been "intensified," with a total of 11,379 rescued so far.
The rescue efforts come as the death toll from the catastrophic flooding in the Nepal-China border region continues to rise.
According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 939 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal.
A total of 3,925 people remain missing in the country, including 583 foreign nationals.
In China, 16 people died and 546 remained missing as of Sunday.
That brings the combined death toll in Nepal and China to 955, with 4,471 people still missing.
"There is loss of life and loss of property as well. Many people have died in the floods. In terms of property loss, houses and land, everything is destroyed."
Meanwhile, China's Meteorological Administration said Monday that more rain was forecast on the border between Nepal and China, further slowing rescue efforts.
It also warned of slippery roads along the routes, raising concerns over possible secondary disasters.
