SnappyDragon | World building through fantasy costume : Interview with the authors M. A. Carrick! @SnappyDragon | Uploaded August 2023 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
Recently, I mentioned the Rook and Rose books by M. A. Carrick and their clever use of fantasy costume design and fashion history knowledge in world building their setting. Well, I got to interview them! Learn more about how they use fashion and historical dress for worldbuilding, from Dungeons and Dragons to fantasy and historical costuming experience and details from historically accurate clothes. Check out their Pattern Deck Kickstarter ( kickstarter.com/projects/mariebrennan/rook-and-rose-pattern-deck ) to help make real-world Pattern cards from the Mask of Mirrors, Liar's Knot, and Labyrinth's Heart. If you haven't read the books, check out macarrick.com for more info!

I was honored that the authors Marie Brennan (known for the Memoirs of Lady Trent) and Alyc Helms (known for the Adventures of Mr. Mystic), who write together as M. A. Carrick, got in touch after my video about historical fantasy costuming and wanted to come on the channel! So we're taking a trip further into Authortube and Booktube to talk about how fashion, fashion history, and costuming can be used by all sorts of writers for worldbuilding, whether you're writing high fantasy, or another genre, or campaign building for D&D! Clothing speaks to all aspects of a society, so costume design can be an incredible tool for character building. Fantasy world building means starting from scratch, and even if your reader or player isn't doing costume analysis, it still tells them so much about your world. Fantasy fashion and hairstyles don't have to be based on reality, but you can draw from fashion history and combine styles to create fantasy dress that makes your fantasy worldbuilding more vivid and immersive. It goes so far beyond medieval costume : fantasy fashion lets the writer refer to styles from many time periods and settings. Marie and Alyc were kind enough to share their costume design references with me and submit to a little costume analysis, as well as running a giveaway for a signed book!
