Edwardian fashion gave us the iconic Gibson Girl style : Fluffy hair and the curved S-bend silhouette, a part of Edwardian dress history that many assume was all from tightly laced corsets. But tailoring can be a big part of Gibson Girl fashion, because of how much shape it adds to a piece of clothing. This tailored jacket construction has several layers to help me look wasp waisted even though my corset isn't laced tightly at all! Gibson girl dress is all about the optical illusions, and tailoring in Edwardian era fashion was an important way to shape the silhouette without altering the human body.
I love Edwardian fashion for this very reason! Pieces like this tailored jacket or a Gibson Girl blouse work well in historybounding everyday looks, but getting dressed in full Gibson Girl style can be so much fun. The joy of fashion history and historical dress is getting to look like you stepped out of a portrait as well as making pieces for every day wear. Tailoring may seem like an intimidating skill, but I hope this tailored jacket tutorial makes you feel a little less daunted if you've been thinking of trying it.
