SnappyDragon | I made Victorian yoga pants! Sewing 1890s split skirt athletic pants (and testing them) @SnappyDragon | Uploaded March 2022 | Updated October 2024, 1 day ago.
I made an 1890s split skirt to try out what Victorian women wore as athletic pants! See how a Victorian split skirt does for a very non Victorian workout, and then use code SNAPPYDRAGON130 to get $130 off plus free shipping on your first Green Chef box at bit.ly/3skZam0

Split skirt pants became popular in the late Victorian era, as Victorian womens sports became more socially acceptable. I love wide leg pants from all periods of fashion history, so it was time for a split skirt diy to add this 1890s style to my wardrobe! Split skirt sewing is surprisingly similar to making a regular Victorian skirt or 1890s skirt, but since they are pants, I hope this split skirt tutorial will help anyone who wants to make their own. It's relatively easy to find a Victorian split skirt sewing pattern : Truly Victorian makes one, there are patterns in extant Victorian fashion magazines and tailoring manuals, and the one I used is from Laughing Moon.

Much of the debate around the Victorian split skirt mirrors the debate around yoga pants today : whether they're "appropriate" or not, whether it's acceptable to wear them for activities other than working out, and so on. Although we think of Victorian clothes as restrictive, Victorian womens sportswear was very popular and functional! Victorian womens exercise included activities like fencing and cycling, which were possible in skirts but definitely more difficult. As womens sports in the Victorian era became more mainstream, athletic clothes became both more practical and stylish at the same time.

Once I finished sewing, I did a split skirt try on and tested out my Victorian yoga pants by doing some yoga! I found it just as comfortable and easy to move in as modern athleticwear, and in some ways even more comfortable.
