Sun, wind and rain. After a month of being attached to the back of the trailer, the awning had only been tested by the first two of those elements. The morning sun that would normally flood the inside of this space was delightfully blocked, which was at first, only a pleasant side effect. Later in the heat of the summer, it became a necessity to help tame the stifling temperatures. As for the wind, the canopy of trees really knocked that down a great deal. Not once had I been forced to take the awning down while parked in this spot. Later on, I moved the trailers and everything to a drier spot because the summer rains had started making things a bit too marshy. In the new spot, without the protection of the forest, I had to add some guy wires made of bungee to tame the canvas and prevent the gusts from lifting it skyward. As for the rain, I found that most of the time it comes straight down. Even in the new spot where the wind is more of a factor, I can leave the doors open and not worry about anything inside getting wet. It's quite pleasant actually to sit in the workshop and watch the rain. Especially compared to the days when I had a house with a leaky roof and was forced not to work whenever it rained. Now I can plug in my computer to the solar bank of batteries, grab a beer from the fridge and edit if it's nasty out. Totally at peace. Unfettered by nature's bath. At least that is, as long as she doesn't flood me out!
All things considered, this awning project has been wonderful. It makes me proud of that sewing machine that I once found emasculating. And, so you know, those endcaps on the PVC are still glued on despite me not using primer!
