To other woodturners I would like to say: this is definitely a sellable item, in January I got a new order for three ashtrays and probably a few more will be coming this year. This makes them my best selling item to date. Making one is quite a bit of work but you can charge a decent amount because they are not for sale anywhere else and many people like the robust natural look of these.
Let me state this clearly once more: I do not smoke myself but as a woodturner I do like to make Ashtrays. What my customers like most is my initial design of a sliced treetrunk with the bark still on and a snuff plate in the middle. I'm fortunate to have a mill for cutting the slots but it can also be done with just a Dremel. Then I have my metal lathe to finish the casted aluminium snuff plates. I'm working on improving the casting process so that I can make them faster. When I get there these may go on sale as well. Post a comment if you are interested.
Over time I made a few adjustments to the design, the most important one is to drill out as much of the pith as possible in order to minimize cracks. Still I recommend all customers to keep their ashtray in a cool environment and apply a little moisture to it every now and then. Let me know what you think!
