Women served essential roles during World War II both in uniform and on the homefront. The Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps, the Navy Women’s Reserve, the Marine Corps Women’s Reserve, the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve, the Women Airforce Service Pilots, the Army Nurses Corps, and the Navy Nurse Corps were all formed during this war. At home, women went to the factories and became “Rosies” as they learned trades that had previously been assigned to men, women volunteered with the American Red Cross, and created Victory Gardens across the country to help support the war effort.
