Because DSLR cameras can provide a very shallow depth of field, getting proper focus can be one of the harder techniques to master. This is made that much harder when you are not behind the camera.

Many YouTubers are both in front and behind the camera. When you are shooting with wide apertures (blurry background, shallow dof) getting the proper focus is critical to getting a great shot. One way I used to get my focus when sitting in front of the camera was by using an intervalometer, see this video: youtube.com/watch?v=q-hngZN_Axs

This method works great but can be limiting because you are still tethered to the camera via a cable as well as the device is too large to hide after you have your focus. But if you already have an intervalometer for doing time-lapse photography then it's a fantastic solution.

However, my newest method is the best yet. The small Canon, wireless remote frees me up to be as far away from the camera as I need to be, get my focus and then trigger the camera to start recording. When I'm done I can also stop the recording with the same device which also easily fits in the palm of my hand or pocket.

To use this, you put your camera into it's timer mode so that it activates the RF receiver on your DSLR. Then set the AF mode to face-tracking so that you can move anywhere inside the frame. Put the remote into the number 1 setting on back, press the button to get focus, switch to setting 2 and press the button again to start recording.

A great way to get your focus and start and stop your recordings all without being behind the camera.
